I get a a variation of this question every fall around the time the Nobel committee announces that year’s winner(s).
My short answer is no, we need the Nobel Peace Prize.?
Here’s why.
We, as a society, are in desperate need of leaders who champion the values of Alfred Nobel:
?1. A?love of humanity
?2.?Courage to stand up for what’s right?(especially when it goes against the culture)
?3. Seeking?peace and brotherhood between people and nations
These past couple of years especially have shown us that such leaders are either few and far in between OR that they are not promoted.
BUT . . . there are some fundamental issues that need to be addressed.
One problem with the Nobel Peace Prize as it stands today, is that many believe the committee is an extension of the Norwegian government. Therefor they don't trust its decisions or take them seriously.
And the concern is well founded.?

A majority of the current committee members are former politicians and have been given the job as a pat on the back for a long and loyal service to the government. Up until 2015, the committee was solely filled with politicians.
Also, the definition of what falls under the PEACE umbrella is unclear to say the least. Often, we are surprised (and shocked) about the committee’s choices, and numerous laureates since the prize’s inception in 1901 have been picked solely because their promotion served the interests of the Norwegian government.
Here are 3 things that, in my opinion, need to happen to re-established relevance and trust in the Nobel Peace Prize:
? Committee members should have a proven interest in peace and should not be former politicians.
? PEACE need to be defined and the definition of what efforts qualify made public.
? The process and work of the committee should be transparent to avoid the committee hiding behind the “secrecy policy.”
