A no-nonsense guide to authentic leadership

A no-nonsense guide to authentic leadership

Ever notice how some people just seem to get you?

Those rare conversations where you can truly be yourself and time just flies without us noticing?

That's what authentic connection feels like – and it's essential for both personal success and effective leadership.

Why most "networking" fails…

We've all sat through those painfully awkward networking events, exchanging contact details and making small talk (or sticking to the drinks table because we don't have energy for small talk). We know that genuine connections don't come from rehearsed elevator pitches. They come from something deeper.

Here are some suggestions for increasing self-awareness and cultivating genuine connection.

Try this self-awareness challenge

  1. The mirror test: At the end of each day, ask yourself: Did I say what I really thought today, or what others wanted to hear? When did I feel most like myself? What made me hold back?
  2. The energy audit: For one week, note which interactions energize you and which drain you. Watch the patterns emerge and see what tweaks you can make to add energy to your day.

Practical ways to build real connections

In your personal life:

  • Replace "How are you?" with "What's been on your mind lately?"
  • Share a recent mistake and what you learned from it
  • When someone speaks, focus on understanding rather than preparing your response

In your leadership:

  • Start meetings with a genuine "wins and challenges" round
  • Admit when you don't have all the answers, and ask for suggestions, advice and help
  • Create "no-judgment zones" for brainstorming and feedback

For some quick self-awareness boosters

  • Set a daily phone reminder: "Who am I pretending to be right now?"
  • Practice the 10-second pause before responding in conversations
  • Ask trusted friends: "When do you see me being most authentic?"

Real connections lead to more meaningful relationships, stronger teams that innovate freely, better problem-solving through honest dialogue and increased trust from those around you

Remember:

Authenticity isn't about sharing everything with everyone.

It's about being real with the right people at the right time.

So, what are your next steps?

  1. Choose one self-awareness exercise to try this week
  2. Identify one relationship you want to deepen
  3. Practice one authentic sharing moment every day

Here's to dropping the masks, embracing our authentic selves, and building connections that truly matter – because nothing beats the power of being genuinely you.

I love replacing “How are you” with “What’s on your mind lately” instead.
