NMFC Changes in 2025
by Amernesa Kelmendi and Sara Gonia
The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system has long been the standard for classifying less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments. It ensures freight is accurately categorized, which helps establish fair shipping rates. This classification is based on factors such as density, handling, stowability, and liability, enabling carriers to protect valuable cargo and reduce shipping costs for their customers.
However, the times are changing, and so is the NMFC. On July 19, 2025, new changes to the system will be implemented to further simplify freight classification and improve usability, accuracy, and efficiency. These changes to the NMFC will impact carriers, 3PLs, and shippers in different ways, but all will reap benefits from the modernization.
