This is without taking into consideration all the SME’s, sole traders etc that are having to close their doors as this economic crisis continues.
Having faced Redundancy back in 2004 I remember it as a challenging time and one that I now look back on and am so glad happened, however in 2004 we were not in the midst of a global pandemic with such devastating economic fallout.
So let’s look at redundancy – whether you opt to take it or are made redundant the facts remain the same it is the role that is going and therefore the individual, not the individual and therefore the role….( lets for now believe this to be true although in reality we know it not to be the case)
Through the process of redundancy and after your contract comes to an end you will be going through a transition that impacts multiple areas of your world.
Income
Confidence
Relationships
Self-worth
Health
Self- belief
Adaptability
It can be a challenge to see beyond where you are and what the next steps might involve for you. Although it was your work role that was made redundant, people often feel that their very identity has been significant eroded. With this comes a number of mental and emotional challenges, for me being made redundant truly was the best think to happen to me, I didn’t know that until a bit later.
Many things will seem out of your sphere of influence, out of your control so its important to really look to take control of what falls within your sphere of influence. This in essence is the way we think, our thought processes, the dialogue we play out in our conscious and unconscious mind that influences what we believe to be true both about ourselves and the situation.
This is where NLP comes into the equation and certainly did back in 2004 when I was made redundant. By reframing how we choose to think about situations we can change the emotional, mental and physical reactions we have. Using powerful processes to overcome previous negative ideas and thoughts to ignite a new and lasting sense of hope.
There are two key areas where NLP can really be beneficial.
1 -How you deal with the mental and emotional impact
NLP focuses on dealing with what you can influence and how you choose to view external events so that you gain a better more favourable outcome. Some of the obvious areas where NLP will help with redundancy are:-
· Reframing negative self-talk
· Regaining focus and drive
· Developing resilience
· Flexibility in thinking and behaviour
· Overcoming fear and uncertainty
· Dealing with stress
· Developing self-belief
2 - Learning new skills, and developing your personal impact in preparation for your next venture.
If you are looking for a new role, NLP will help you:
- Perform at your best in interviews
- Boost your confidence
- Improve your influencing skills
- Obtain coaching to identify new goals and opportunities
- Overcome any negative feelings associated with the redundancy
- Help you define what you value in a role.
So back to 2004, my introduction to NLP couldn’t have been more timely, It gave me the self- belief, focus and clarity I needed to get through a challenging time and as I said at the beginning I have never looked back.
Many companies are gifting their employees facing redundancy a lump sum of money to retrain, up skill whatever you might choose to call it. NLP will provide you with all the skills and behaviours you will need to become whatever it is you choose as your next step.
