NLP Beliefs - For Better Communication

NLP Beliefs - For Better Communication

For the past 30 years Neuro-linguistic Programming has not only been growing but transforming people’s lives. It has helped millions of people overcome phobias, increase confidence, find inner peace, boost work place performance and achieve success. NLP was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder through modelling the most successful therapists of their time and applying some of the tools they used on clients. It explores the relationships between how we think, communicate, as well as our patterns of behaviour and emotions. It is a valuable method for personal development and psychotherapy.

In this article I’m going to discuss the basic beliefs and philosophies that NLP has. Understanding these values and attitudes will help you learn how to communicate more effectively with others and become more self-aware

The map is not the territory

Your map of the world is not necessarily accurate. Which means your reality of the world is your own reality. You have created your own truth through your life experiences. Many times this is not the actual external reality of what is really happening. If two very different maps get together there may be communication chaos. This is why it’s vital to understand other maps, respect them and communicate accordingly. It’s necessary to try and understand the other person’s model of the world, even if we may not agree with it.

We already have all the resources we need, or we can create them

There are no unresourceful people, just unresourceful states of perception. People are doing the best they can with the level of knowledge, education and awareness provided to them. Everyone has the resources inside of them for change. Although many times they may not know how to utilise these tools. We all have access to the internal states that we desire and it’s only a matter of knowing how to access them. People have the power to feel confident, happy, content and excited at any given moment through anchoring their state.

Anyone can do anything

If they can do it then why can’t you? It’s all about finding out how that person achieved certain outcomes and modelling that behaviour. What is stopping you? Limiting self-beliefs? Lack of perseverance? Resources? You will notice that many successful people had little resources yet one thing they had in common was their determination and resilience.

There is no such thing as failure, there is only feedback

Each time we don’t achieve the results we want, we get feedback which can be useful information in order to do things differently next time. Legend has it that after Thomas Edison invented the light bulb he was asked by a journalist why he had failed about 200 times to invent the light bulb. Edison replied that he hadn’t failed 200 times but instead had found 200 ways not to invent it.

If you go on doing what you're doing now you are very likely to go on getting the same results as you are getting now

There are many people out there who keep on repeating the same actions in order to get different results. It’s pretty simple, if it’s not working then change it. Model others who are successful and have achieved similar results. Keep changing and learning until you get the desired outcomes.

Your mind and your body are invisible parts of the same system

There is scientific proof that by altering your thoughts, posture and smile, it causes a neurological shift and changes the active mixture of neurotransmitters in your brain. This sends a message to your brain that you’re feeling happy, confident etc. Your physiology and your mental state can affect how you feel. They are both connected to each other and react to what you feed them. If you slump over and frown your physiology sends signals that you’re feeling depressed.
