NJMH 2021 Annual Gala on June 8th
Dear Friend,
On behalf of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem I am extremely excited to present our 2021 Gala Event, the “Roots & Routes of Jazz” featuring award-winning celebrity bandleaders and artistic directors for the museum Christian McBride and Jon Batiste.
In his acceptance speech for the Oscar for the animated film “Soul” for Best Original Score, Jon Batiste said "God gave us 12 notes. It's the same 12 notes Duke Ellington had, Bach had. It's the same 12. Nina Simone. … I'm just thankful to God for those 12 notes, man. That's so dope.” It gave me goosebumps to hear him talk about the power of music and to feel his excitement and passion as a music creator.
Music is one of the few things that is literally stitching together the very fabric of our society while so much else seems to be working to tear us apart. Supporting music is to support our connections as human beings and to recognize that we are capable of transcendence and grace. We need music and music also needs us sometimes.
When I joined the Board of Trustees last year I was deeply honored to be given the opportunity to lend my hand to the museum’s mission to preserve, promote and present jazz music. You can help too.
Whether you are a hardcore jazz music fan or someone who is “jazz curious” who finds comfort in hearing someone like Diana Krall sing a tune that transports you to a happy place, I’d like your help in celebrating this most unique American medium and artform. The National Jazz Museum in Harlem has a special role to play in connecting us with the impactful history of jazz music. You have a role as well.
Please consider becoming a sponsor of the museum with a gift that supports our educational programming, performances and events. Your contribution is deeply appreciated and I thank you.
