Nintendo and its 130 years long journey in the Gaming World

There's no way that someone hasn't heard about Nintendo in today's time. It's one of the biggest names in the gaming world. A Japanese Multinational video game company that goes a long way, before Esports was even a thing. In this blog we'll be discussing how Nintendo was established, how it became so famous, the games it has released, and how/ why it is relevant even after so many years.

Overview

Nintendo Co., Ltd. is a Japanese multinational video game company headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. It develops video games and video game consoles and has become a home name in the Esports and Gaming industry in the past few decades. Nintendo was founded in 1889 as Nintendo Karuta by craftsman Fusajiro Yamauchi and originally produced handmade hanafuda playing cards. After venturing into various lines of business during the 1960s and acquiring a legal status as a public company, Nintendo distributed its first console, the Color TV-Game, in 1977. It gained international recognition with the release of Donkey Kong in 1981 and the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Mario Bros. in 1985. Nintendo has multiple subsidiaries in Japan and abroad and business partners such as The Pokémon Company and HAL Laboratory.?It is one of the wealthiest and most valuable companies in the Japanese market.

The Glorious Past of Nintendo

Nintendo was founded as Nintendo Karuta on 23 September 1889 by craftsman Fusajiro Yamauchi in Shimogyō-Ku, Kyoto, Japan, to produce and distribute hanafuda, "flower cards"), a type of traditional Japanese playing card. The name "Nintendo" is commonly assumed to mean "leave luck to heaven", but the assumption lacks historical validation; it can alternatively be translated as "the temple of free hanafuda"

According to data from Nintendo, the company's first western-style card deck was put on the market in 1902, although other documents postponed the date to 1907, shortly after the Russo-Japanese War. World War II negatively impacted the company as Japanese authorities prohibited the diffusion of foreign card games, and as the priorities of Japanese society shifted, its interest in recreational activities waned.

In 1959, Nintendo contracted with Walt Disney to incorporate his company's animated characters into the cards. Nintendo also developed a distribution system that allowed it to offer its products in toy stores.?

In 1974, Nintendo released Wild Gunman, a skeet shooting arcade simulation consisting of a 16 mm image projector with a sensor that detects a beam from the player's light gun. Both the Laser Clay Shooting System and Wild Gunman were successfully exported to Europe and North America.

Two key events in Nintendo's history occurred in 1979: its American subsidiary was opened in New York City, and a new department focused on arcade game development was created. Since then, there has been no looking back for Nintendo.

Games developed by Nintendo

Nintendo has released so many games that the list goes endless. Here, we'll take a look at some of the most famous games which made the maximum sales by the company in the course of its presence of more than half a century in the Gaming world.

  • Brain Age
  • Kirby has sold over 41 million games since the series debuted on the Game Boy in 1992.
  • Game & Watch: Nintendo pumped out 60 Game & Watch titles between 1980 and 1991—five dozen small, flat little handheld systems that could play one single game each. It sold over 43 million units worldwide.
  • Super Smash Bros. has sold over 66 million games.
  • The Wii Series sold over 204 million copies worldwide.
  • Pokémon, everyone's favorite game has sold over 380 million units. It's not just Nintendo's second-best-selling game franchise but the second best in all of video game franchises.
  • Mario, the one and only, the OG. It shouldn't be any surprise when we tell you that Mario has sold around 763 million units worldwide. Owing to its craze and popularity around the world, these figures definitely make sense.

Why is Nintendo so famous and how is it still relevant?

Founded in 1889 as a producer of toys and playing cards, the company is quite distinct from the typical perception of Japanese firms that have become global players, those that constitute large conglomerate firms with manager-CEOs and headquarters in Tokyo. In an industry that is as dynamic as the stock market, it's interesting to see how Nintendo has made it so far and still stays relevant in the industry. Let us take a look at a few reasons for the same:

  • The inclusivity: The Wii helped Nintendo to create games that appealed to women and the elderly – including sports, fitness, and even yoga – ignoring typical games based around combat simulation and rejecting the conventional wisdom that video games are the domain of testosterone-driven hardcore (and inevitably male) gamers.
  • The adaptability and accessibility: With its emphasis on games playable by every member of the family, the company paved the way for its current popularity and reach of social games among casual players.
  • The simplicity: Games have come and gone but we all know Super Mario always stayed with us. Gamers have an emotional connection to that game. High-quality graphics, characters, nothing. A simple game that made its mark like none other.
  • The casual and fun approach: Their games are built to bring just casual fun to players. They are not focused on graphics or real-time physics. They are focused on player emotions and fun instead. While all companies are proclaiming they are focused on gameplay only a few of them know how to deliver casual fun every day for a casual audience.
