Nine to Know: Takin’ It Back to 1999

Nine to Know: Takin’ It Back to 1999

01: We Partied Like It Was 1999?

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO, LAUREN PARKER

On December 31, 1999, my best friend and I made snacks and watched Dick Clark freeze in Times Square. Like all other eighth graders that year (resist calculating my age, please), we were worried if the Y2K hysteria would mean we’d lose access to our AIM accounts (which may be why the recent TikTok ban felt like déjà vu).?

Recognizing the magnitude of ushering in a new century, we decided to do something creative to commemorate the milestone. Each grabbing an empty shoebox, we started rummaging through the house and gathering trinkets for a time capsule. A pair of sunglasses. A bottled Starbuck’s Frappuccino (mocha flavored). A list with names of our crushes. Pogs (including a prized “slammer”).??

When the box was full, we wrapped it entirely in clear contact paper so peeking wasn’t an option. Then, with a black Sharpie we wrote: DO NOT OPEN UNTIL 2025!!!

Well, here we are. At that time, 2025 seemed like an astronomical jump into the future. Today, 1999 feels like yesterday. I’m embracing both perspectives with gratitude.?

Happy New Year~?

To this day, I still remember the AIM away message I had for Y2K. Between that, the RIP behind iPod and seeing Gen Beta (So “entitled!” Haven’t done anything yet but sleep and eat and look adorably cute.) this is the most “in my day we walked uphill both ways” comment I can leave. Thanks for all the goodies and nine things I need to know!
