NIH Launches CARE for Health? To Engage Primary Care Physicians and Communities in Clinical Research

Despite great progress in biomedical research, the health of important segments of the U.S. population is getting worse, not better. Life expectancy has dropped. Mortality rates have increased during the last decade, particularly among those underrepresented in clinical research and underserved in health care. This includes people from certain racial and ethnic groups, those who are older, those who live in rural areas and those who have low socioeconomic status or lower educational attainment.

That’s why NIH is launching the Communities Advancing Research Equity for Health?, or CARE for Health?, a new primary care research network that will integrate clinical research with community-based primary care. CARE for Health? seeks to improve access to clinical research to inform medical care and will begin in rural communities. ?Primary care providers will help develop ways to overcome or prevent important health challenges that matter to the communities they serve. By asking people what they need and delivering results that benefit them, we hope to build trust in research and demonstrate it can benefit all who need it.

My guiding principle as NIH Director is that our work is not finished when we deliver scientific discoveries; our work is finished when all people are living long and healthy lives. CARE for Health? aims to make sure all Americans can benefit from the latest scientific research has to offer.

I’ll be describing my vision for CARE for Health? at a public webinar on June 7.

Health access and equity- amen. I will be glad for the day when examination rooms for wheelchair users are onsite everywhere- that a table can be lowered for me/others and raised for the provider’s back. Glad when rural folks don’t have to drive hours to see specialists- neurologists, gynecologists, vascular and cardiothoracic surgeons, etc should be available at every hospital. That said- just having a hospital is something every community should have. Our country would save so much money if all Americans had healthcare insurance and avoided the chronic diseases that cripple quality of life and productive society. If we bought the food and had a dietician go to homes to teach people how to eat healthy for a year or more—before diabetes, heart disease, etc developed.. there’s so much we could do to better lives and our society as a whole. Water- not soda. Good food not processed junk. Glad for the initiative and hope for the best politically so it can continue. Kin in WV down in the hollow had to drive to Cleveland Clinic for Crohns. No GI doctors there at the county hospital.
