IDeA States Need Basic Science Too!
In Vannevar Bush’s 1945 report?Science, the Endless Frontier [PDF] , he wrote:
“A nation which depends upon others for its new basic scientific knowledge will be slow in its industrial progress and weak in its competitive position in world trade, regardless of its mechanical skill.”
This principle also applies to U.S. states and the academic institutions in them. When resources are limited, organizational leaders are often tempted to focus their research efforts on applied studies that could have short-term payoffs. It’s easy to understand this reasoning because there are often pressing health, social, and economic problems close at hand that are crying out for prompt action. However, economic studies, including a recent paper by?Hans Gersbach and colleagues ?and a?2012 study by Andrew Toole , have indicated that basic research is essential to overall advancement, even on a local level.
Sharing NIGMS T32 Grants Training and Career Outcomes
The funding announcements for our NIGMS institutional predoctoral National Research Service Award training grants (T32) ask grantees to report and disseminate training and career outcomes in a publicly available format. Training outcomes are relevant to both students and to the broader community to monitor the success of our evidence-informed training and mentoring activities. A website is an easy way to disseminate training and career outcomes.
I anticipate that some of our T32 program directors may welcome examples of websites that publish career placement of trainees. While we aren't suggesting any specific approach, here are some examples ...

Which Mentored Research Career Development Award Is Right for Me?
Early career investigators (postdoctoral and faculty) are often seeking a mentored research experience to further develop their careers in biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research. This includes?new and early stage investigators ?who are doing research within the?NIGMS mission ?and don’t have a major research grant. To make it easier to find the right program, we’ve launched a new web resource,?Which NIGMS Mentored Career Development Award Is Right for Me?
Request for Information: Expanding the Technology Scope of NIGMS Resource and Centers Programs
NIGMS supports?National and Regional Resources (NRRs) ?that provide biomedical researchers with access to mature technologies and?Biomedical Technology Optimization and Dissemination (BTOD) Centers ?that optimize and disseminate late-stage technologies for the research community to use. The NRR-associated mature technologies are ready for researchers’ immediate use without further development. By contrast, the late-stage technologies supported by BTOD Centers require optimization prior to dissemination to the biomedical research community.
APS Consortium Study Materials Publicly Available
The ARDS, Pneumonia, and Sepsis (APS) Consortium is funded through?a collaboration between the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and NIGMS . This large observational study will collect longitudinal data and biospecimens from approximately 4,000 adults hospitalized with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pneumonia, or sepsis at over 20 hospitals in the United States. The scientific goal is to conduct analyses to gain greater understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying APS and, in particular, to link to well-defined clinical phenotypes.
