Nightmare for Designers
What do designers fear the most and how to overcome it?
Have you ever wondered what is creativity? It is that elixir that fuels the capabilities of an artist and a designer to perform. I used to believe it’s an intangible force that evolves out of nowhere and sometimes it doesn’t. Who amongst us, designers, hasn’t sat down staring at a blank piece of paper or a blank file on the computer screen waiting for the moment of inspiration to strike our heads and heart?
I feel that creativity is beyond simply pondering over thoughts and creating new ideas. It is also overcoming and winning over emotional creative blocks from time to time. Many artists share their experiences of fear and vulnerability when staring at white sheets of paper. There are various other fears to overcome such as the fear of missing out, fear of bad or sick ideas, fear of finding out that you’re just not worth it, fear of not feeling good at what you do, fear of not knowing where to begin, fear of being your worst critic, fear of never meeting the deadlines, fear of overpromising and under-delivering, fear of being compared to other designers and as many more as you and I can create in our minds.
You need to banish your inner critic and overcome all such fears in order to bring out your designs on paper. There is no right or wrong design, there is no sick design, there are no rules in design and what works for some may not work for others. Design is subjective and its only purpose is to communicate, inform and attract. The last thing you want a design is to be dull and boring.
It is never easy to discover the elixir or fuel you are so looking to break through a creative block but hopefully, through time, practice, persistence, sharing your fears with other designers, getting inspired by others works, and often taking a break can help you overcome the hurdles and create designs that you desire.
