On the Night Stand

On the Night Stand

Whoever said, “if you want to lead, read”, I agree wholeheartedly. But, I would submit, “if you want to innovate, read.” Innovation is all about new ideas but where do you go to learn about what’s worked in the past and what might work in the future? Read. How do you develop the intellect and the library of ideas on which to draw for innovation? Read. How do you cultivate your credibility and compete for the attention of new clients? Read. How do you create presence and thought leadership credibility when pitching? Read.

Reading is important. Don’t believe me? Descartes, Twain, Disney, Munger had something to say about that.

“The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest (people) of the past centuries.” — Descartes
“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.” — Mark Twain
“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.” — Walt Disney
“In my whole life, I have known no wise people (over a broad subject matter area) who didn’t read all the time — none, zero.” — Charles Munger

And of course, simple, but probably my favorite.

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” — Joseph Addison

Here’s what’s on my night stand.

Love the concept of “creating magic.” Looking forward to learning the art!

Out of the long list of emerging and transformative technology that’s gaining maturity, AI tops the list. No future technology strategy is complete without AI being a fundamental part of it!

I must say, I’m fascinated by this concept, the history of precision.

Finally, some leadership training from the guru himself!

Ahh, one more, to satisfy my need for classic literature, from the master of the English language!

Agree 100%. I simply do not understand executives, or anyone really, who claim to be innovators or thought leaders who are “too busy to read.” Then where do their new ideas come from? Perusing and restating others’ quick views in the news or social media? Insufficient and ill-advised, IMO.

I agree! have seeds of ideas planted when I read. Then, I quickly reach out to my talented / crazy smart network to help me to grow the idea. Read + Collaborate is my formula for innovation. Thanks for sharing, Jeff.
