A Night to Remember: Finding Hope and Humanity - Mount Elbrus, An Angel and Me.
The evening of June 22nd is a day I’ll never forget. It reminded me of the goodness in people. That night, we had to check our gear for the summit. To my dismay, my summit climb boots and gaiters were missing. I quickly informed Anton, our new guide. He contacted Andrey, the lead guide, who told me there was no way I could summit without the proper boots. My hiking boots wouldn't be enough; it would be too dangerous.
Sitting on a bench, feeling the weight of disappointment, I watched my friends, Akin and Nancy, ready to go. The plan was for all of us to reach the summit together. Anton spoke with Andrey again, and then came back to me with surprising news: Anton was willing to lend me his boots, but only if they fit. Before trying them on, I asked Anton if he was sure I couldn’t use my own hiking boots. He showed me his toes, damaged by frostbite from a previous climb. Tears welled up in my eyes. I stood up and gave Anton the most heartfelt hug. I could feel his warmth and care.
At that moment, I looked up and smiled, feeling saved once again. Many people ask me where my confidence comes from. It’s my faith in my Maker. No matter where I am, He’s always with me. Anton was a reminder of that. When I first met him, I had told him to do whatever it took to help me summit. This climb wasn’t just for me; it was for everyone I hope to inspire. I want people to break free from fear and laziness and choose to live their best lives now.
Just as we were about to leave our accommodation this morning, I found my boots hidden under another bed. Someone must have moved them. This meant I wouldn’t have to pay for lost boots, saving me a lot of money. It’s a reminder: never lose hope, just have faith and do your best. The universe has a way of sorting things out.
