The night I met AUGGIE-the 'wonder' boy!

It was a random night, past bed-time, when I was not able to fall asleep. While turning sides and having browsed through all the common themes of my life currently - work, relationships, future, home - I decided to have a different experience. I decided to watch a movie on Netflix, which I haven't done in a long, long time. I haven't willingly shut my daily routine and done something out of the way, just for leisure. And this reminded me...

While trying to make life, we actually forget to live it!

I browsed through a few options and chose to watch Wonder-the movie (2017). This is a movie about a little boy, who has a rare facial deformity due to a condition called Treacher Collins Syndrome, who tries to blend in with society after entering school for the first time. It subtly and carefully weaves the emotional journey of this child - August 'AUGGIE' Pullman - and of those related to him and the new relationships that he builds on the way. My experience of watching this movie was two beautiful hours full of tears, claps, grins, sobs, disgust, pride, and so many thoughts. Just as much the movie is worth watching, I felt a viewer's thoughts while watching it are worth sharing as well.

So, sharing a few of my many thoughts while Auggie's journey:

  • Watching Auggie walk around wearing an astronaut's helmet made me think that ~ I want to help people feel good about themselves and worthy of respect
  • When students belittled Auggie for his way of eating, his hairstyle, and his appearance, I thought ~ Watching people in pain or face injustice is so painful that it makes me cry and stand in support for that person
  • When Auggie's friend Jack apologizes to him, I thought ~ It is okay, good, and courageous to apologize when you make someone feel bad about themselves
  • Auggie's sister Olivia was the perfect in pretending to be happy to her parents so as to not burden them with a lot of problems already on their plate, which made me think that ~ Those who appear to be happy, may not actually be happy
  • Olivia was often left to tend to her little brother or tend to herself while her parents were busy taking care of other responsibilities, and that's when I thought ~ Parents may not realize when they, unknowingly, steal away their child's childhood while staying busy working on their priorities
  • Auggie's parents were always too worried about their little one that they could not pay attention to their elder one, which made me think that ~ Kids may end up carrying the baggage of their parents' shortcomings
  • Auggie's mother Isabel took a lot of time to recuperate her career, watching which I felt ~ It's important to remember who you and your dreams are, while playing other equally and not more relevant roles in your life
  • Watching Auggie remain at a distance from everyone who approached him for friendship was coming from his bad experience in friendship with Jack, where I thought ~ Sometimes we are not able to identify the genuine ones and push people away while being suspicious of everyone's intentions due to our ugly past experiences
  • Auggie's classmate Julian expressed disgust towards Auggie similar to what his parents felt for Auggie, which instantly made me think that ~ Children adopt a lot from their parents' worldview
  • Olivia's friend Miranda had a dysfunctional family environment due to parents' separation and ignorance towards her, which made me think that ~ All we can do is BE KIND, for everyone is fighting a hard battle

I would recommend this movie a hundred times to every single person across the world. It just fills you with insight into real problems, awareness of others' emotions, cruelties of society, acceptance of reality, possibilities of turning shortcomings into strengths, being compassionate towards others, and much more about kindness and love!

Go! Watch it! Then, share your thoughts and emotions with me in the comments below!
