ON “NIGERIA, WE HAIL THEE”

On Page 38 of my book, EMPIRICAL ALGORITHM FOR PROBLEM-SOLVING AND PROACTIVE DECISION-MAKING, published on March 10, 2024, I wrote the following about Nigeria’s problem:

“Nigeria’s official motto is Unity and Faith, Peace, and Progress. The founding fathers of Nigeria (or was it the British?) saw this ethnic problem and prescribed unity and faith as the national maxim or ingredients to ensure peace and progress. Unfortunately, they ignored the need to create powerful institutions to safeguard unity and faith in the polity. The Constitution should have been the starting point to permanently stamp that maxim, and engrave that credo, but many things went wrong.”

“Nigeria exists in defiance of its national maxim. This contradiction is the source of Nigeria’s problem. Nigeria will neither be united in faith nor experience peace and progress without resolving this contradiction, and this can only be done by eliminating the problem of ethnicity and religion.”

“Based on Nigeria’s motto, it is tempting to suggest, alternatively, that Nigeria’s problem is a LACK OF UNITY. That will be correct! However, trying to solve the problem of “lack of unity” can be more complicated because “unity” is a state and not an action. The best way to solve the problem of unity is to identify the precise factors responsible for the lack of unity and deal with those factors.”

“No country can survive without patriotism, but. tribalism has replaced patriotism in Nigeria.”

Reverting to the old National Anthem may be a move in the right direction because the old National Anthem correctly identifies the root of Nigeria’s problem. But will the National Assembly take the bold and most important step and set up the right framework to solve this problem and be committed to implementing it faithfully?
