Nick Chavez’s VetSec Success Story

Nick Chavez’s VetSec Success Story

From Google Cybersecurity Course to IT Technician

A Journey from Aspiration to Achievement

Nick Chavez 's story is the kind of success that inspires anyone embarking on a new career path. Transitioning into cybersecurity isn’t easy, but with hard work, a supportive community, and the right resources, Nick not only landed a role as an IT Technician but did so with a solid foundation for future growth. Here’s how Nick’s determination and the invaluable support from VetSec played a pivotal role in his journey.

Nick Chavez

The Starting Point: A Dream in March

For Nick, the journey into the cybersecurity world began in March, when he decided to take the plunge into tech by enrolling in the Google Cybersecurity Course. Like many veterans and aspiring tech professionals, he sought a path that offered both challenge and opportunity. But Nick didn’t stop at just completing the course—he quickly leveled up by earning two foundational certifications:

  • ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC): A strong first step for building credibility in the cybersecurity field.
  • CompTIA Security+: An industry-standard certification that opened doors to broader IT and security opportunities.

By June, Nick had two certifications under his belt, a growing knowledge base, and a clear focus on his goals.

VetSec: A Game-Changer

While certifications and courses are essential, Nick credits much of his success to VetSec, a community dedicated to empowering veterans in cybersecurity. According to Nick:

“The support from the VetSec community has been a key factor in my progress. They’ve been instrumental, not only with resources and guidance but also by offering real-world insights and resume assistance that helped me transition into my first IT role.”

The practical advice and encouragement from VetSec members, especially John S. (Google Senior Security Consultant), provided Nick with more than just tools—it gave him confidence. Resume reviews, interview tips, and real-world advice on certifications are just a few of the ways VetSec bridges the gap between veterans and the cybersecurity industry.

The Breakthrough: Landing the IT Technician Role

In August, Nick’s hard work paid off when he landed his first IT role as an IT Technician in Albuquerque, NM, with a starting salary of $70,000. For Nick, this wasn’t just a job—it was the foundation of a fulfilling career.

Since starting, he’s been deeply involved in areas that many aspiring cybersecurity professionals dream of working in:

  • IT Governance and Security: Helping ensure his organization’s IT operations are compliant and secure.
  • ISO 27001 Certification: Assisting his company in pursuing this internationally recognized information security standard.

These responsibilities have allowed Nick to directly apply his knowledge while gaining hands-on experience that will serve him well as he progresses.

Building on Success: A Bright Future Ahead

Nick’s drive didn’t end with his first IT role. In September, just one month after starting his job, he took the next big step in his professional development by enrolling in the Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance (BSCSIA) program at Western Governors University (WGU). Balancing a demanding job with higher education is no small feat, but Nick has embraced the challenge.

And the results speak for themselves: not only has Nick been excelling at work and school, but he’s also on the verge of an exciting promotion to Cybersecurity Analyst—a position that will allow him to deepen his expertise and make an even greater impact in the field.

The VetSec Difference: A Community That Gives Back

Nick’s gratitude for VetSec is clear, and it’s easy to see why. From resume assistance to mentorship from experienced professionals like John Stoner, VetSec provided the kind of personalized support that can’t be found in a textbook or online course.

But Nick’s journey is also about giving back. As he continues to grow in his career, he’s more motivated than ever to help others who are just starting out. His success is a testament to the power of community, perseverance, and the belief that no veteran pursuing a cybersecurity career should go unemployed.

Closing Thoughts: Advice for Aspiring Professionals

Nick’s story is a roadmap for anyone looking to break into the cybersecurity field:

  1. Start with the Basics: Certifications like the ISC2 CC and CompTIA Security+ are valuable first steps.
  2. Find Your Community: Join groups like VetSec to access resources, mentorship, and moral support.
  3. Never Stop Learning: Enrolling in a degree program or pursuing advanced certifications keeps your skills sharp and relevant.
  4. Be Patient and Persistent: The transition to a new career takes time, but every step—big or small—gets you closer to your goal.

A Final Word from Nick

As Nick reflects on his journey, his optimism is contagious:

“The journey is just getting started! Both the job and classes have been going well, so well that I may be promoted to Cybersecurity Analyst very soon. Wish me luck!”

We don’t just wish Nick luck—we know he’ll continue to excel. With his dedication and the support of VetSec, the sky’s the limit.
