The niche that enables MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) to stand out in their competitive space.

During my last trip to Vancouver Canada, I was truly amazed by MEC which is similar to our version of anaconda adventure stores. MEC sells outdoor recreation gear and clothing exclusively to its members.

As Australia retailer in this sector are struggling to survive, MEC has a very different model and I was very interested to learn more.


The biggest take-away for me was around the “Rock Solid Guarantee” This is so bold it turns all of their members in their marketing ambassadors.


For example, I was visiting with friends who had just purchased some new boots and Vince was such a fan of MEC he explained in great detail why you should never buy any clothing or recreation gear from anyone other than MEC. “you know if I am not happy with my boots, even 2 years after I purchase them, I take them back and Get a new pare or compensation”


Can you imagine how powerful it is to have your loyal customers, do your selling for you? Even if you took goods back, your experience is so positive you still would be telling your friends to shop with them.


MEC invests into employing the right team (Adventures), they train and support the team and therefore have confidence in offering and promoting their best in industry Guarantee.


The are other factors working towards MEC success but isn’t it interesting how this retailer’s niche is working, and they are winning by being different.


Australian retailers in any sector should have a close look at what these guys are doing confidently in Canada.
