A NIce catch...

One of the windparks which runs Bachmann’s Blade Unbalance Calculator suddenly reported alarms from several turbines over a weekend at the beginning of April.?After a brief review, it was clear that this was a transient event.
Our suspicion was icing, which appeared to be borne out by weather reports, so we checked with the site team, who confirmed that was the case:
It’s great to see that the blade unbalance calculator algorithm works so well, and amazing just how much unbalance has been generated during this icing event.
?But of course our unbalance calculator is not for detecting ice.?By providing a sensitive measurement of rotor unbalance, turbine owners can find out how far inside the manufacturers’ tolerance the turbines are operating.?Any major unbalance will be clearly visible in the general turbine vibration, for example in the drivetrain CMS; however with the blade unbalance calculator it is possible to detect more subtle trends occurring on turbines running with vibration below the normal limit values, and through this plan which turbines need to receive attention during low wind seasons.
?I like to bring interesting snippets like this into our approved training to ISO18436-2, to show just how versatile vibration analysis can be.?Sign up at https://www.bachmann.info/en/campus/knowledge/bindt
