Summary
A pilot study was undertaken by Fundamental Surgery, using their Spinal Pedicle Screw simulation at the Royal London Hospital. Participants experienced the haptically-enabled virtual reality simulation to assess the face validity of the simulation and provide feedback to aid in improving the educational platform.
Background: Pedicle screw placement, particularly in deformed spines, creates unique challenges and a lengthy learning curve is required to ensure efficiency in the surgical time taken and in optimal screw placement.
Method: Participants were recruited at the The Royal London Hospital. Nineteen participants covering a wide range of surgical training (from trainee to consultant) agreed to take part in the study.
Conclusion: In summary, this pilot study demonstrated that Fundamental Surgery’s Pedicle Screw Simulation combining VR and haptics provides a valid surgical simulation that can enhance the surgical confidence of the surgeon who uses the simulation regularly.
