NHS pulse

NHS pulse

Sunday evening reflections...

Last week was quite a whopper in the NHS with the annual NHS Providers 2023 conference, I was in Liverpool with Andreas Haimb?ck-Tichy joining Vital and then the annual HSJ Awards which 埃森哲 sponsored and I attended with Shashii I Asnaani - I saw a few friends and colleagues who’d also ‘done the double’ last week. Hope you’ve had a good and restful weekend.

#Optimism

The number of CEOs including Alex Whitfield and Siobhan Melia saying it’s a privilege to be in this role and we need to be optimistic to attract and retain the best talent, despite the challenges. News announced at the conference, such as the hope to eliminate cervical cancer, is uplifting news and a reason to be optimistic.

#Passion

Amanda Pritchard apologized for bashing her mic by mistake sharing stories of her travels around the NHS seeing innovative examples of healthcare. The Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP then talked of sharing ‘the best of the NHS with the rest’ and ‘making the extraordinary the ordinary, which was warmly welcomed by the auditorium audience.

#Digital

Consistent themes of driving productivity to improve health inequalities and needing to embrace data and digital to do this came through. Amanda Pritchard saying the data platform would have been a dream and now will be a reality demonstrated how far we've come. A common view was that final agreements to end all strike action will need to be the base, before further productivity focused programmes, given the significant financial pressures. Let's focus on reducing waste and driving digital solution; Miriam Deakin hosted a great panel session.

#Patient focus

Some honest views on how much the public still care and value our NHS, with Ipsos Mori's Anna Quigley saying 7/10 people feel the NHS is 'crucial', a strong word. With virtual wards and the digital potential, we need to be less 'lazy' about categorizing people or assuming older people don’t engage with tech. Tara Donnelly saying 79% of people would happily engage with tech to stay at home, regardless of age! Actually the barriers are often more to do with social mobility and health inequalities, yes Dominique Allwood . Hence a round of applause for all those supporting our EDI managers with inspiring stories of their impact e.g. from Daniel Elkeles, CEO at London Ambulance Service NHS Trust , whose team have navigated sensitive situations in London reflecting the conflicts in the world today.

?

For those of us back in London later in the week, the energy and pulsing Evolution Centre had palpable vibes Thursday evening, with the thousands of amazing people nominated for an HSJ Awards - (well done to my friend Sarah McKellar for winning an award on her birthday), if we could bottle that atmosphere….A new week ahead, bring it on....

Thanks for the summary Samantha Knollys, interesting reflections. I feel the next two years are going to see a significant increase in the roll-out and use of patient portals - it will be interesting to see the impact of these, but I feel that in their present form they are just the thin wedge; the real impact on health inequalities should come in on the back of them - let's see if the suppliers can rise to the challenge!

Great summary Samantha Knollys - I really enjoyed NHS Providers conference too. I was struck by the the focus on #quality and #productivity improvements and how #digital and #data play a pivotal role in achieving both.
