Local communities helping to shape the new ten-year plan for the NHS

We are supporting the largest ever staff engagement in NHS history - joining local community groups across our area to ensure as wide a range of voices as possible are heard in the shaping of the new ten year plan for the NHS.

Here in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight our staff are working harder than ever to consistently deliver the best care. We are facing many challenges - record demand for care, an ageing population and patients with more complex needs.

We know change is needed, which is why we are working to deliver our Renewed Ambition for patients and staff. This is already making a difference for people - as explained in this short video message (see above) from our Chair, Lena Samuels, on some important recent milestones for our local NHS.

This is a once in a generation opportunity to make the NHS fit for the future and we need your voice.

Go to change.nhs.uk to find out how you can take part.

New resources available to help support our winter campaign

This winter we’ve been working with our communities and partners on delivering communications with two key aims:

  • To enable people to stay well at home with simple advice on important issues like managing coughs and colds, keeping warm and the importance of getting vaccinated.
  • To raise awareness of the range of services available and when to access them. This includes the promotion of things like Pharmacy First, the Healthier Together app and the 111 service

All of the local and national resources are available to download through our Campaigns Centre. This includes translations into some of the many languages spoken across the diverse communities of Hampshire and Isle of Wight. Please do make use through your own channels and networks.

If you would like to discuss how you or your organisation could support further with sharing this important messaging please do get in touch with us at [email protected].

Our joint statement with Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in response to the publication of the government’s New Hospital Programme review:

“Following the government’s review of the New Hospital Programme, we can confirm that the Hampshire Together programme is in Wave 3, and as such is now scheduled to begin construction between 2037 and 2039.??

“Whilst this delay is disappointing, we await further information before we can assess the full implications.?

“We are committed to improving the quality and sustainability of our hospitals and health services and will continue to keep patients, staff and our wider community at the heart of these plans as our programme progresses.”?

Connecting people with community - tackling social isolation

Loneliness is a part of life and we're all affected by it. But there are times when people may be more at risk. This can include after a stay in hospital, becoming a new parent or leaving home to go to university.?

Connecting to support in the local community is important to help people stay well and thrive. We’ve created a new web page to bring together the wealth of information, support services and groups in one place. There are links for professionals to refer people into support services and information for people who may be feeling lonely to find connections in their local community.

Visit the Not Alone web page.?

If you have ideas for new resources and groups we can signpost to that could help please do get in touch with us at: [email protected].

Mental health support this January

The winter months can be a challenging time for many of us and our mental health.?If you’re struggling with your mental health at this time of year it is important to seek help as soon as possible.

Across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight there are lots of ways to support yourself or a loved one – from self-care to talking therapies to urgent crisis support.

Parents and carers urged to download the Healthier Together app for health advice at your fingertips?

With cases of flu, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), COVID-19 and other childhood illnesses rising, parents and carers across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are being urged to download the Healthier Together app.

This winter we have seen an extra 980 children attending our Emergency Departments with coughs compared to 2023. There were also more than 800 children taken to Emergency Departments with a sore throat between October and December 2024.

The Healthier Together app has been designed by children’s doctors in partnership with parents. It can help you decide whether you can self-care at home and which service is best for the needs of children aged up to 18, if you do need NHS help.
