NHLANHLA NENE AND THEMBA GODI ON “A DREAM DEFERRED”

IIA SA hosts annual conference where duo expected to speak on state capture, corporate governance, corruption, the country’s State-Owned Entities and SA’s economic blueprint   

Johannesburg,  August 2017 – South Africa’s former Finance Minister, Nhlanhla Nene, and the chairman of parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts, Themba Godi, will participate in a panel discussion next week on the country’s socio-political climate and its economic trajectory.

The two are scheduled to speak at the 20th Annual Southern Africa Internal Audit Conference at the Sandton Convention Centre which runs from 14 to 16 August 2017.

It is hosted by the Institute of Internal Auditors South Africa (IIA SA) which is the third largest body of its kind in the world. The theme for the conference is “Stepping into Unchartered Territories” and will see a veritable Who's Who in finance, accounting, banking, risk management, academia, mining and manufacturing sectors, among others, coming together.

Nene and Godi will participate in the opening discussion titled “The National Development Plan: A Dream Deferred?” which will be facilitated by financial journalist Chris Gibbons. Nene is presently a Non-Executive Director at Allan Gray, a resident advisor to Thebe Investment Corporation and is the Interim Director of Wits Business School, based at Wits University. 

On Tuesday 15 August 2017, the conference will host a gala dinner where several awards will be handed out to industry professionals. The prestigious Guardian of Governance Award will also be announced. Last year’s recipient of the inaugural award was then-Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela.

The IIA SA conference is the biggest international audit conference in Africa and will feature several presentations and panel discussions on best business practices, cyber-crime and hacking, risk management, fraud and corruption, among other topics. Some topics include:

·        Fraud Fall-out Recovery by Advocate George Barnes of Forensic Investigation and Risk Management Consultants;

·        Purpose, Service and Impact by Mike Peppers, the Chairman of IIA Global;

·        Bad Things Happen to Good Auditors by Robyn Wheatley, a Senior Internal Auditor with Sasfin Bank;

·        Attributes Of High Performing Internal Audit Departments by Richard Chambers, the President and CEO of IIA Global;

·        Hacked! To Disclose or Not to Disclose by ABSA Bank's Vice President of Internal Audit, Dr. Christiaan Roos; and,

·        The Future of Money by futurist, Raymond de Villiers, of Tomorrow Today.

IIA SA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Claudelle von Eck, said she was extremely thrilled at the calibre of speakers and invited guests “who will definitely challenge us as a nation, as a profession and individually on building a better society and stronger, more inclusive economy through best business practice and ethical leadership”.
