NHDOT Hires SkillBridge Intern

In November, NHDOT welcomed Lewis Hicks permanently on staff as part of the Marlborough Highway Maintenance Crew.?He recently completed the six-month SkillBridge Program in District 4. “Being able to participate (in SkillBridge) while working with NHDOT has been an amazing experience,” said Hicks. “I’ve been able to learn valuable skills while working with an awesome team.”

The Department of Defense SkillBridge program is an opportunity for service members to gain civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internships in civilian career areas.?Service members participating in DOD SkillBridge programs also continue receiving their military compensation and benefits, while industry partners provide the civilian training and work experience. DOD SkillBridge is an opportunity for industry partners to access and leverage the world's most highly trained and motivated workforce at no cost. New Hampshire Department of Transportation is one of the few companies in NH that will help service members with the hope that they will one day become a NHDOT employee.?

His supervisor, Highway Patrol Foreman Christopher Hall, acknowledged, “As an Army Reservist, I have spent the last 20+ years serving my country. I understand the commitment and sacrifice that one gives to serving one’s country.” HPF Hall added, “As in any job with new employees, there are hurdles that one goes through to learn, teach, and grow. Lewis has been a great asset to our team and the organization.”

District 4 has had great success with the SkillBridge program and Lewis’s work for us.? Hicks received his Commercial Driver’s License through NHDOT’s on-the-job-training program. He’s had lots of hands-on experience and became a full-time employee in the middle of November. Lewis said he looks “forward to my new career and the opportunity to serve my community.”?
