NFPA-72 Requirements for RF Cable?

NFPA-72 Requirements for RF Cable?

Team,

Some recent traffic on two-hour fire rating for RF cables used in public safety DAS systems has come up.  I'm seeking input on what folks are doing across the country in various AHJ's.

In particular, NFPA 72, 24.3.5.8.1 states:  Where a two-way radio communications enhancement system, exclusive of the antennae, is used in lieu of a two-way in-building wired emergency communication system, it shall have a pathway survivability of Level 2 or Level 3.

 NFPA 72, 12.4.3  Pathway Survivability Level 2.
Pathway survivability Level 2 shall consist of one or more of the following:
(1)     2-hour fire-rated circuit integrity (CI) cable
(2)    2-hour fire-rated cable system [electrical circuit protective system(s)]
(3)    2-hour fire-rated enclosure or protected area
(4)    2-hour performance alternatives approved by the authority having jurisdiction

On item (4) above, we have one AHJ that is calling for plenum cable inside conduit for DAS installations.  I remember the late Jack Daniel told me that the City of San Francisco had been giving exemptions for this with the proviso that if rated cable came on the market, owners would retrofit.

Any input from the field on this matter would be appreciated...Thanks!!!

Further to these lemons, we have made some lemonade. Burn To Learn is a project to test and document survivability of DAS components in a controlled burn (ASTM E 119 time-temperature curve to 1850 degrees F). Stay tuned for updates.
