NFPA 302: Fire Protection Standard for Pleasure and Commercial Motor Craft

The purpose the NFPA 302 standard is to minimize the loss of life and property due to fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide aboard pleasure and commercial vessels.

I am looking forward to the 302 committee meeting this week at NFPA headquarters in Quincy, Mass. We will be reviewing and discussing public inputs to this standard toward our goal of improving safety on pleasure and commercial vessels.

Your input is important to NFPA and I would like to thank all of you who have submitted public comments and recommendations to 302. I urge all interested parties to submit recommendations for this and any other NFPA standard pertaining to their areas of interest [note that I used the word recommendations, not complaints!] The process is fairly simple and open to all. Go to https://www.nfpa.org/codes-and-standards and see how.

Make a difference, save a life!

You should also know that the NFPA 302 Committee on Motor Craft is seeking members in the interest classifications of Installer/Maintainer, Applied Research/Testing Laboratory, Consumer, Enforcer, Labor and User. With the recent notice of proposed rule making (NPRM) entitled “Inspection of Towing Vessels” (published in the Federal Register on August 11, 2011), the Committee is looking for representatives from the towing vessel industry.

I see many strong opinions and complaints from members of the towboat industry on LinkedIn. Maybe it is time to push away from the keyboard and take some proactive action.

Fike can certainly assist protecting engines and any high risk areas onboard vessels. https://www.fike.com/fike-video-analytics-maritime-solutions/

Dean Vaughn makes a great point. An effective NFPA 302 standard can minimize fire danger from lackadaisical builders and inattentive crews

The risk of fire is ever present. In the past 10 years I've had fires, which could have resulted in a total loss, if it weren't for fire detection, isolation and suppression systems. Two were on adjacent boats and two onboard. All stopped by crew that knew how to react. The most dangerous fire is the one on an adjacent boat. Because you cant access it or manage circumstances onboard an adjacent vessel.
