The next wave of computing

The next wave of computing

We are at an incredibly exciting technology inflection point. The virtually limitless computing power of the cloud, combined with increasingly connected and perceptive devices at the edge of the network, create possibilities we could only have dreamed of just a few years ago – possibilities made up of millions of connected devices, infinite data, and the ability to create truly immersive multi-sense, multidevice experiences.

While much attention has been paid to the cloud innovations, the advancements at the edge are becoming equally remarkable. And, of course, the experiences built using the cloud and edge together are what become truly transformative. The intelligent cloud and intelligent edge application pattern, transforms the way we can interact with digital information and further blend the physical and digital worlds for greater societal benefit and customer innovation.

The intelligent cloud is ubiquitous computing, enabled by the public cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) technology, for every type of intelligent application and system you can envision. The intelligent edge is a continually expanding set of connected systems and devices that gather and analyze data—close to your users, the data, or both. Users get real-time insights and experiences, delivered by highly responsive and contextually aware apps.

Take a look around your house, office or even the next store you visit, and you’ll start to notice that internet-connected devices are bringing us closer than ever before to a world of ubiquitous computing and ambient intelligence. As these Internet of Things (IoT) devices become increasingly commonplace, people will start to expect computing to be more integrated into their lives, to anticipate, understand and seamlessly meet their needs. They will expect software to respond to spoken natural language, gestures, body language and emotion, and for it to understand the physical world and the rich context surrounding each user as they navigate their personal life, their work and the world around them.

This trend has more promise than just bringing additional convenience, productivity and connections to our everyday lives. Smart sensors and devices are breathing new life into industrial equipment from factories to farms, helping us navigate and plan for more sustainable urban cities and bringing the power of the cloud to some of the world’s most remote destinations. With the power of artificial intelligence (AI) enabling these devices to intelligently respond to the world they are sensing, we will see new breakthroughs in critical areas that benefit humanity like healthcare, conservation, sustainability, accessibility, disaster recovery and more.

Combine the virtually limitless computing power of the cloud with intelligent and perceptive devices at the edge and you may just... create the future

Sadly War & Governance itself is always an issue. Corruption always stems from absolute power. It’s interesting that all the power obviously stems from money. Only by disruption of existing frameworks can the ‘Killer Apps’ that can make money fairer be decentralised, and the ‘Killer App’ that can make Governance fairer- DAOs made entirely possible by Ethereum. Governance without authority. ‘Distributed Autonomous Organisations’. Technology such as BitCoin solved the ‘unsolvable’ Byzantines General Problem & Ether the Corrupt Governance Problem. There are now systems where people can build organisations that have no company, no official names of people and yet anyone on earth can own a stake in them, get paid out fairly, contribute, build on top of them and none of it exists anywhere within current legal structures. All we need to do now is build to choose the ‘correct’ lifestyle choices and trust technology as the saviour. Just as technology saves many lives medically, it may also save lives politically. There is a long way to go. But lets at least make a start.
