Farquharson's ship picked up a contact on a submarine. Depth charged, it was forced to surface. The submarine, however, had a bigger gun with a longer range than the four-inch one on Farquharson's ship. If the crew of the sub were instructed to man their deck gun, his ship would be outgunned. As the submarine surfaced, Farquharson could only hope that it would surrender quietly. But it was not to be.
