The next ten years within the built environment

The next ten years within the built environment

I genuinely believe that the built environment is going to experience a purge within the next ten years. Any company that does not evolve is not going to be able to be competitive on cost, time or quality.

The consultancies and tools of the future are going to be working quicker, more efficiently and more accurately, and we are already starting to see a handful of consultancies being early adopters in offering full digital transformation new age delivery within the built environment and becoming the big competition to a "traditional consultancy".

We all know that BIM has not been accepted in open arms among the majority of the consulting business and STILL hear daily companies refusing to work in BIM unless they receive additional fees.

Same old process + Same old mindset = a very grim future.

If you cannot change your mindset, product and business model to a business which works with big data, then you will be dead in 10 years. The transition over to big data within the construction and property industry is not only happening for buildings, but it's also HAPPENING TO BUSINESSES GLOBALLY.

Humanity does not like change; that is a fact. Most companies run on routine and guess what anything can change that routine. Changing your routine in a business is a big deal and takes planning and thought to successfully even change the day you have your weekly board meeting. There is nothing wrong with reaching out for help, we are in a time where we have more resources than ever before to help us change, but, unfortunately, people or companies are resourceful enough.

In my experience, the built environment is going through a little bit of an identity crisis with regards to pride and ego. As a business owner myself, I can understand how pride can affect attitude to change.

Imagine you have built a business up from the ground over 20 years and you have "made it" and now you are being told you need to change to a new way of working, you need databases, you need to use machine learning, you need to use social media across 5 channels to communicate to your clients. Making things worse you need to also deliver all projects in BIM, and what the hell is a smart city and whats a digital twin "this is just someone making up words and acronyms" "Its just another fad".

I understand why many people are still skeptical that the future of the built environment will ever indeed change, as there have been many failed attempts in the past to make real change and most of the deepest routed problems still exist today.I firmly believe this is going to be different. The introduction of smart contracts and Integrated Project Delivery (full team transparency) alone, will revolutionise the industry.

The tide has already turned, and I am now advising clients that if you do not start to embrace the digital transformation of the built environment NOW, it's doubtful your business will be here in 10 years. I extend this comment to architects, engineers, contractors, subcontractors, BIM consultancies, builders, plumbers, roofers, electricians, quantity surveyors, project managers and everyone else out there. This global change of business is going to force a human evolution, and its anthropological change that we feel, is the key to making long-lasting change.

THE-D set up for one purpose; to provide any company or person in the built environment an ally, a partnership that can guide you through the changes required to not only survive but thrive in the future of the built environment. We offer services across five different departments. We do not want to see any businesses leaving the market because they were too stuborn to change.

  • Business Consultancy
  • Digital Transformation Strategy / Delivery
  • Digital Services
  • Project Delivery
  • Leadership Change Coaching

We offer a free consultation with any new client, we will give an outline assessment of what you need to change to survive in the future built environment industry.

I am quite hard hitting, I know. As leaders and visionaries, we need to stand up and share everything we identify with the FULL industry.

Everyone trying to change the built environment I take my hat off to you, but we need more people to stand up, more people to look bigger than BIM and we need to start talking about the human changes required to thrive in the future build environment.

We already have some case studies of clients we are supporting with digital transformational strategies with companies of all sizes, and we would be more than happy to share.

I am planning on becoming a registered leadership coach, NLP practitioner and I am currently writing my thesis in my project management MSC on the human revolution required in the built environment to build a society for the future. I am not just making the big statements, I want to see and lead the big changes required.

Our free consultation is open to everyone, and we will introduce one of our professional digital transformation specialists to give you an outline assessment.
