This past weekend, 1.65 million people took 90 minutes out of their day to watch what could only be described as a historical moment. For the first time in thirty-six years, The Canadian Men’s National Team has punched their ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. The last time Canadians had the privilege of rooting for the Reds was in the 1986 FIFA World Cup which was hosted in Mexico.?Fans of all ages spent their Sunday evenings celebrating after Canada’s 4-0 defeat over Jamaica. The cold temperature did not deter the thousands of fans from gathering at BMO Field. The electric atmosphere paired with the cheering was enough to distract most fans from the brief snowfall in the second half. Many are still buzzing as this is their first time seeing their country participate in the iconic tournament. Some folks are using this time to reminisce and remember where they were during this time 36 years ago.
Nick Bontis, the President of Canada Soccer, recently gave an interview where he was asked to share his thoughts on what has changed from 1986 till now.?
“The professionalization of the game in Canada….Today we are benefiting from the fruits of our labor and our investments”
This statement alone is enough to reveal the efforts that have gone into this new era. From player development to marketing to strategic partnerships – this organization is already making a big ripple in the world of soccer.
