Next Step Exec

This is the first edition of our Linkedin Newsletter - welcome!

If you subscribe to my Next Step HR newsletter you'd be familiar with the name Hat Tricks - because I'm known for wearing many hats and in that newsletter I share 3 updates with you - where have I been, I have arrived and what have I got under my hat. Here, however you may already have heard some of these stories through my posts so I thought I'd repackage my newsletter into an exec version for LinkedIn.

Next Step Exec is about you and your development. What can you do to take that next step in your leadership journey. Leadership also comes in threes so here's your Next Step Exec Hat-trick for this month!

1. Leading yourself - how well do you know yourself?

Have you ever wondered why you choose to do the things you do and why others choose to do different things? Do you know that your internal human operating system runs on values and beliefs from which we rationalise and that it is our underlying beliefs that can limit us? A common limiting belief is 'I'm not good enough' - this can end up making us put other people's agenda's ahead of our own - which is great for connection in the short term and bad for career development in the long term. If you can consciously recognise when you are doing this you are on you first step to choosing a more empowering belief. if you want to know how to create an empowering belief - look up the book Out of the Maze: A Simple Way to Change Your Thinking & Unlock Success

by Dr Spencer Johnson

2. Leading others - do you know the impact you have on your team?

I often coach leaders to become aware of the gap. Not the performance gap - the gap between their intentions and their impact. There is so much to learn in this space and it is unseen. How clearly do you state your intentions so that there are no misunderstandings? It isn't a common practice - but how good would it be to not have to second guess the agenda that someone has when they ask you to do something or when they offer an opinion. Next time you are in a meeting try it. Start with - my intention here is to highlight an area we might not have considered that could make this project fail - then give the feedback. It will land so much better with others, than if you offer the critique with no context. Context always matters.

3. Leading an organisation

Leadership is not a solitary endeavour - at the organisational level it's all about collective leadership decision-making and how well you work as a team with your fellow leaders. The most under developed organisations do not understand this. They have leaders who work independently from each other, compete internally for resources and create an internal environment that focusses on a scarcity mindset. The best leadership teams work together and are interdependent - making sure that the resources go where they can create the most value. The best book I read on this subject isn't on the best sellers list - though it should be The Heart Of Leadership: Unlock Your Inner Wisdom and Inspire Others

by Sabina Spencer

P.S.

if you want to be an inclusive leader you've come to the right place! Human centred leadership is about listening to your heart as well as your head. The Next Step Exec is both compassionate and wise.
