?? BYTEDANCE'S NEW APP LEMON8 CLIMBS US CHARTS

TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, has launched a new lifestyle-focused app called Lemon8, which has climbed to number nine on the US app store charts. The app, which was launched in Japan in 2020, has been described as a combination of Instagram and Pinterest and offers a feed separated into “following” and "for you" sections. Lemon8 App is a departure from the vertical video scrolling that characterizes TikTok and seems to be more focused on influencers and product tagging. ByteDance has been paying influencers to post on the platform, similar to the strategy it used to grow TikTok. While Lemon8 is gaining popularity, the big question is whether it will face the same potential ban as TikTok.

?? PEW RESEARCH FINDS MAJORITY OF AMERICANS SUPPORT TIKTOK BAN

Pew Research Center conducted a study on American attitudes toward a potential TikTok ban. The study revealed that only 22% of Americans oppose a TikTok ban, while more than half are in favor of it, and more than a quarter are unsure. While this may not come as a surprise to many, as general consumers may have different opinions compared to creators, it's important to note that 40% of Americans between the ages of 18 to 29 didn't know that TikTok was owned by a Chinese company. Additionally, the study found that 88% of Americans across all ages don't trust Chinese social media companies, while 75% have similar misgivings about American social platforms.

?? TIKTOK FINED £16M FOR CHILDREN'S DATA PRIVACY BREACH

The Information Commissioner's Office found that TikTok inappropriately allowed 1.4 million children under 13 to use the service in 2020 without parental consent, which resulted in a £16 million fine . However, this is not the first time TikTok has been fined, as they were previously fined $5.7 million in the US for violating children's online privacy protection rules. It's concerning to see social media platforms failing to adhere to safeguards for children online, and this is not limited to TikTok. Google was also fined $170 million for violating data privacy rules for children on YouTube. It's clear that more guardrails need to be in place to safeguard children's data and limit their exposure to potentially harmful content on social media platforms.

?? IS LIVE SHOPPING A DUD IN THE US?

Wired Magazine claims that live shopping is a dud in the West. Calling it a dud seems a bit premature to us. While there are some successes out there, you do need to search for them. Overall, live shopping hasn't taken off as some had expected, and a different approach may be needed in the US. We don't just want to be entertained; we also want to be informed. It's essential to integrate shopping into the content instead of the reverse. Companies considering the addition of live shopping to their marketing efforts must evaluate what they are selling and whether it would be more effective for their business. In conclusion, we believe that live shopping holds potential in the US, and it should not be dismissed based on the lack of initial success stories.

?? WHALAR ANNOUNCES MOBY VENTURES?

Whalar has launched a new creator-centric venture studio called Moby Ventures. The new division will be led by Jo Cronk and Niko Croskery . The launch of Moby Ventures signals further growth in the Creator Economy and a continued push to legitimize creators as business owners. While the details of the venture have not yet been disclosed, the initiative feels like a natural extension of Whalar's talent management services. We are big fans of resources that support creators in building businesses and diversifying their revenue. Just like traditional entrepreneurs, it's important for creators to have access to capital and educational resources. We are excited to see how things develop with Moby Ventures! Congrats to Neil Waller ?? and the rest of the Whalar team ??

??? FAZE CLAN DOWNFALL?

This week, we came across a fascinating post by Reed Duchscher about the downfall of FaZe Clan , a creator-led eSports company. FaZe Clan went public on Nasdaq but has since experienced mass layoffs, plummeting stock prices, and unrest among creators and fans. This situation highlights the potential pitfalls of focusing too much on the financial side and losing sight of the community that made the company successful in the first place. As the Creator Economy continues to grow, it's essential for creators to remember the importance of maintaining authentic connections with their fans and communities. Failing to do so can lead to the downfall of even the most promising creator-led businesses.

As someone whos not a big fan of Instagram or Pinterest, Lemon8 (which is basically a combo of them both) is insanely boring in somehow a worst way then the originals. Atleast with those sites, i felt like i was discovering things, but Lemon8 makes me have to click on things, thus taking the fun out of it. It gives the feeling of flipping through a textbook until you find something thats vaguely interesting only to discover its the same info from the intro. Tiktok was interesting cause you could open the app at anytime and get the wildest stories, pictures, etc. from the most random of ppl. I like random. No hate to those who like lemon8 but if there was ever an competition of apps to get a teen to look at their phone less, lemon8 is a great contender for #1
