Next Gen Fusion BA

Off late, we come across many individuals who are working with Non-BA titles but may be performing many activities which are core to a BA role. At the same time, we also come across a lot of individuals who have a BA designation, but are performing project support roles (like Testing, Planning, Project Management etc.). These are turning out to be common norm the day that we come across in various industries & companies. More & more companies today want individuals who are equipped with multi-role skills (also known as Fusion/Hybrid Roles) who can bring in additional value to the project initiative.

Companies with these mixed roles, could structure the roles in such a way that may not suite your background, qualification, experience or long term career objectives. If you are already in such a role, or been offered such a role, or considering to pick up such a role then below are some of the factors that may help you decide/guide you through the decision-making process –

• How Comfortable are we with Job Functions? How comfortable is an individual performing the Role & activities that is been offered? Many individuals would like to be Masters and expertise in the specific roles that they are in. However some are keen and comfortable performing multiple roles with good results, without being or wanting to be an expert. There is no single way to success, but Individual should review their own strengths, weakness and confidence level, in performing these activities before they decide.
• How much of BA Activity does the Roles offer? Individuals should evaluate the extent of BA functions that one may have to perform along with other roles that is been offered. Project Managers & Non-BAs who are want to transition to BA roles, would prefer roles where they are expected to perform fewer BA functions. This would enable them undergo a path of learning to equip themselves with BA Skills gradually and then move to roles with higher BA responsibilities.
• How much of Non-BA functions does the Roles? Similar to the above, full time BAs would also have to pick up other skills to complement with their BA capabilities. BAs may prefer to pick up roles with less of other roles like Project Management or Testing at the beginning of the fusion roles. This would enable BA to equip their capabilities with other skill sets. Experienced BA would pick these skills easily with borrowed and/or project experiences.
• How much of value add can you be to the project? All fusion/hybrid roles are always created to ensure that Project team members would perform multiple roles. Act as backups for each other and ensure they contribute & compliment to each others’ works. Individuals with fusion roles would continue to perform good in projects, as long as they are able to add more value to BA functions & to other functions they are responsible for.
• Would this role propel you to the desired Career milestones? Everyone needs to be focused on the long term career objectives and levels they aspire to achieve. As they work towards that objective, they need to learn, work and improve on their skills which would help them achieve their career aspirations. Every role that is been offers need to be evaluated and reviewed to understand if that role would help an individual reach that objective. Will the offered role provide the individuals the right opportunity to learns skills & capabilities that are needed for the roles that they aspire in the long term.
• How much are you willing to learn and move ahead? Individuals eagerness, willingness and curiosity to learn and improve oneself would play very vital role in success. Individuals should be willing to learns skills, domain, technology, soft skills and others skills which would always help them grow and move ahead. If one is not willing to learn new skills and technology, they would get outdated very soon.
