What exactly are NFTs?

With all the recent market hype surrounding NFTs, both good and bad and everything in-between, it’s important to step back and reiterate what makes them so unique and why they'll likely be around to stay.?

At their core, NFTs are non-fungible tokens that can be used to indicate ownership over unique items. They achieve this by using blockchain distributed ledger technology to create a transparent and unchangeable record of ownership.?

Being non-fungible means that no two tokens are alike, and so every NFT is unique. As a result, most NFTs today come in the form of collectible artwork with varying degrees of complexity and are used as stores of value or status-symbols, with little other mainstream utility.

Why do we really need NFTs?

Much like in the physical world, proof of ownership, identity, and authenticity are necessary for attributing value to anything in the Metaverse. If we can’t be sure that something is authentic and that we’re buying it from its rightful owner, it’s too risky of a purchase usually.

NFT technology provides transparent and immutable proof of these qualities, allowing us to cultivate value and express ourselves authentically in this intangible space. In many cases, people have crafted entire online personas based on which cryptocurrencies they own and what they do with them, or which NFTs they collect and how much they sell them for (if ever).

Basically, NFTs are the answer to the commonly asked question - “How can you compare something digital with something real?”
