Industry Buzz: News from the Gaming World

What happened in the industry in the past 2 weeks? Let's take a look together!??

A Glimpse Into the Future

2024 marks an exciting time for the mobile gaming industry. Here are some of the key developments to look out for according to pocketgamer.biz:

  • Advanced AR technologies are being integrated into games, providing immersive gaming experiences that blur the lines between the real and virtual worlds.
  • The widespread adoption of 5G is transforming game design with faster connectivity and reduced latency. This is leading to a revolution in cloud gaming, which enables high-end gaming experiences on mobile devices without the need for sophisticated hardware.
  • Diversity and inclusivity are at the forefront, with games featuring a wider range of characters and narratives.

Our local experts from Sunday are chiming in with their predictions as well:

  • André Noller , Principal Game Designer: IMO, no major changes are expected since market conditions seem unchanged. We'll see a rise in AI usage, more studios shifting towards hybrid casual models, and an increase in layoffs. Former hyper-casual developers will need to enhance their mobile game design skills and innovate in free-to-play monetization to succeed in the hybrid market.
  • Vladislav Ladizhenski , Head of Growth: Several big steps towards a more fair and transparent market will happen on the monetization side. Starting at the end of January, as Google removes Waterfall placements, publishers exploiting Google's placement refreshment trick will no longer have an unfair advantage. Also, as enforced by Google, publishers will have to provide their European users with not only more detailed information about the advertising they will see in their games but also the ability to object to their data being used for marketing purposes.
  • Umut Onel , Game Lead: AI usage in game design, coding, and other areas will strengthen and become more prevalent. We will see an increase in games with in-app purchases (IAP) and those offering rewards, featuring stronger game design elements that encourage players to willingly watch ads or spend money, rather than relying heavily on direct interstitial ad-driven hyper-casual mechanics. Additionally, there will be greater use of in-game advertising, such as placing brands within games; for instance, our "Cat Escape" might feature an actual cat food brand.
