The Next Best Move

The Next Best Move

If I've begun to sum up the most frequent worries in a leader's head over the last 8 years we've been working with them, there will be definitely one screaming louder than all the rest. If you've ever worked 30 continuous days as a leader, trying to keep all your subordinates well (yeah, I'm aware that it's not PC anymore to call them that, but truth be told, I haven't known any leader who could ever keep referring to them as teammates for an extended period...), this is the thought that's in your head as well.

How could I offer them a great career ladder without giving up my chair?

You've invested thousands of hours in them, and as soon as you realize that they're ready, you're the one starting to panic.

Is that a known situation?

I hope so, because it's absolutely normal, even confessing.

And as you have no idea what to offer since your chair is reserved, and there are no middle positions for them, you start to avoid the topic altogether.

Which is the worst thing you could do.

You don't have to read all the Generation Z articles to be sure that without a way to move forward, there is no motivated person on the globe.

The answer is easier than you might think. You don't have to care about the exact way they're going. But still, you're obligated (is it a strong word? Really? Why? Either you're doing it, or you're losing them. So is it a harsh word? No, it's not.) to show them the next best move.

Why? Because money won't give happiness – a sentence we all hear, which is definitely not true as it is. But part of it might be. For example, in our case.

Yes, they're not running toward higher payment, a longer Audi, or a more complicated position name. But they are running toward not boring their heads out. Toward individual responsibility. Toward something new.

No matter whether it's a step to the right or left, a new position created for oneself, a six-month twist with a peer, or a year-long assignment in the countryside—whatever it may be—it's not about the details of the step, but the step itself.

If it's still a longer Audi, give me the key. If it's not, who cares, but I have to feel that I'm not stuck in a box forever. And yes, my forever definition might differ from yours. But excuse me, I'm watching YouTube videos at 2.5x speed while you have no clue how to find that button at all.

Yes, we are different.

So if you're sitting as a leader and you'd like to cross career planning off your to-do list, forget it. You'll never be ready, as there will be a next best move for everyone in your team, no matter how fresh they are in their positions. It is never too early to think about it.

So, what's yours? What is your next best move?

Nálam, a mobilon legalábbis…
