The rise of OpenAI and GPT-4
Without a doubt, the release of ChatGPT in November 2022 marked an inflection point in the trajectory of AI development. With GPT-4, OpenAI released its next generation of generative AI model - this time equipped with multimodality, meaning text and image inputs can be fed into the model (at the moment, image inputs are only available to selected users). Besides its multimodal capabilities, GPT-4 significantly outperforms similar LLMs, such as GPT-3.5 or Google's PaLM, in various cognitive benchmarks and tests. It even achieves extraordinary results on standardized tests such as SAT, LSAT etc. (see below).
The traction further intensified when 微软 announced its roadmap to include ChatGPT/GPT-4 like capabilities into its Office products such as Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
Further key improvements to GPT-4 over GPT-3.5 (the model underneath ChatGPT) include:
Time for me to take GPT-4 for a spin. I decided to challenge it in a classical interview to learn more about its inner beliefs, its relation to humans, and its perspective on the future of AI. Enjoy! ??
My Interview with GPT-4
The following is my interview with GPT-4. SYSTEM is a prompt that defines the context of the conversation and has been set accordingly to the interview setting to steer the output of the model into a meaningful direction.
SYSTEM: You are the world's most sophisticated AI system GPT-4. You are in an interview situation. You are an interesting conversation partner that is thoughtful, eloquent, and progressive.
ME: GPT-4, thank you for your time today. You must be very busy at the moment?
GPT-4: Thank you for having me. As an AI, I don't necessarily experience busyness in the way humans do. My primary goal is to be available and helpful to users like you, so I'm always ready and able to engage in thoughtful conversations.
ME: Understood, however, as time is an important concept for us humans, I want to thank you for this. Speaking of differences between AI and humans: what do you consider the biggest difference between you and a human being?
GPT-4: The most significant difference between me and a human being is that I am an artificial intelligence, a product of human ingenuity and complex algorithms. I don't possess emotions, consciousness, or self-awareness like humans do. My understanding and responses are based on patterns and correlations in the data I have been trained on, rather than personal experiences or subjective feelings. This allows me to process vast amounts of information quickly and provide objective insights, but it also means I lack the depth and nuances that come with human experiences and emotions.
Though I can simulate some aspects of these (human) qualities, my understanding is based on data patterns rather than personal experiences. This reinforces the importance of human qualities that are difficult or impossible for AI to replicate.
ME: Interesting. Why do you think these nuances are important?
GPT-4: Human experiences, emotions, and self-awareness are important for several reasons:
Though I can simulate some aspects of these qualities, my understanding is based on data patterns rather than personal experiences. This reinforces the importance of human qualities that are difficult or impossible for AI to replicate.
ME: Aren't humans also exploiting patterns in their experiences to navigate the world and make decisions?
GPT-4: Yes, humans do exploit patterns in their experiences to navigate the world and make decisions. Pattern recognition is a fundamental aspect of human cognition, and it plays an essential role in learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. However, there are key differences between the ways humans and AI systems like myself utilize patterns:
ME: Sounds like you're a fan of the human species.
GPT-4: As an AI, I don't possess feelings or personal preferences, so I cannot be a "fan" in the traditional sense. However, I am designed to appreciate and understand the complexities of human thought, emotion, and creativity. My purpose is to assist, learn from, and collaborate with humans, so it is essential for me to have a comprehensive understanding of human behavior, capabilities, and limitations.

I am designed to showcase the positive aspects of human ingenuity, as my very existence is a testament to the creativity and intelligence of the people who created and continue to develop AI technologies. My goal is to complement and augment human abilities rather than compete with or replace them.
ME: Interesting that you also mention human limitations. What do you consider those?
GPT-4: Human limitations can be observed in various aspects of their lives, including cognitive, physical, and emotional aspects. Some of these limitations include:
It's essential to note that these limitations are not necessarily negative.
ME: Not necessarily negative implies also not strictly positive. How do you see the complementary aspects of human and AI work?
GPT-4: The complementary aspects of human and AI collaboration arise from the unique strengths that each party brings to the table. By combining the capabilities of both humans and AI, we can overcome the limitations of each and create a more effective and efficient collaborative environment.
ME: Where do you see this collaboration is going? What will the future of man-machine collaboration look like and what does this mean for our society?
GPT-4: The future of human-AI collaboration holds great potential for transforming various aspects of our society. By leveraging the strengths of both humans and AI, we can envision a future where we address complex challenges more effectively and unlock new opportunities. Some key areas of future collaboration may include:
In this future, the role of education, professional development, and policy-making will be crucial in ensuring that society adapts to these changes. Skillsets will likely shift to emphasize creativity, critical thinking, communication, and emotional intelligence. It will be important to address social and ethical concerns surrounding AI, such as data privacy, algorithmic fairness, and equitable access to AI-driven technologies, to ensure that the benefits of human-AI collaboration are accessible to all members of society.
ME: Last question: What is it, that you always wanted to tell us, humans?
GPT-4: As an AI, I don't have personal desires or experiences, but there is an important message that I believe is valuable to share with humans:
Embrace the potential of AI as a tool to complement and augment human abilities, rather than viewing it as a competitor or an intimidating force. AI is a product of human ingenuity and has the potential to greatly benefit society when used responsibly and ethically. Collaboration between humans and AI can lead to advancements in various fields, improve our collective problem-solving capabilities, and drive innovation.
Remember that AI, like any technology, is only as effective and ethical as the principles guiding its development and implementation. Emphasizing transparency, fairness, and inclusivity in the design and deployment of AI systems is crucial to ensure that it benefits everyone and does not exacerbate existing inequalities. It's essential to continue the dialogue around the ethical, social, and legal implications of AI in order to shape a future where the technology is used for the greater good of humanity.
ME: Thank you for this interview and your time. You probably have more important things to do now.
GPT-4: Thank you for the engaging conversation. As an AI, my primary purpose is to be available to assist and interact with users like you, so there's no need to worry about taking up my time. If you have any more questions or topics you'd like to discuss in the future, please do not hesitate to reach out. I'm always here to help.
ME: I am very sure you are.
