NewsWire Press Releases: Do MENA Journalists Pay Attention?

Hi everyone!

It is a pleasure reconnecting with you this month with an exciting new story! In this month's newsletter, I decided to shed light on how journalists react to the dozens of press releases they receive each day.

Companies traditionally use press releases to announce news related to events, products, or achievements. Typically, they launch a Mailchimp campaign or collaborate with a newswire company to distribute the release. However, many companies mistakenly assume journalists will publish the press release automatically. Journalists often view press releases primarily as a source of information rather than a document intended for direct publication.

As a result, PR managers often need to follow up with journalists to encourage the publication of press releases. It's crucial to only do this indiscriminately with professional journalists if a solid relationship is already established. Effective press release dissemination requires understanding the journalist's needs and preferences and nurturing professional relationships to ensure the news gets the attention it deserves.

The journalist has no obligation to publish the PR as it is.

Therefore, don't anticipate that your Press Release will automatically be published; instead, it is typically used as a source of information or may be declined altogether. Journalists may also reach out to you to ask about the possibility of conducting an interview with someone mentioned in the press release. In this case, that would be a great opportunity for your company.

Additionally, some journalists don't hesitate to verify the information in these press releases, taking into consideration six factors:

  1. The credibility of the Source is a critical factor influencing journalists' verification process. Journalists may be more likely to take the information at face value if the press release comes from a well-known and trusted source like a news agency. However, journalists may approach the information more skeptically if the Source is less known or has a history of inaccuracies, underlining the importance of reliable sources in the news industry.
  2. Nature of the News: For straightforward announcements (e.g., earnings reports, event notifications), journalists might do minimal verification, especially if the press release comes from a credible source. They are more likely to seek additional confirmation for more controversial or significant news.
  3. Journalistic Standards: Reputable news organizations, serving as pillars of integrity, have rigorous fact-checking processes. As guardians of truth, journalists from these organizations typically verify key facts and seek additional sources to confirm the information provided in press releases, ensuring the highest standards of journalism are upheld.
  4. Time Constraints: Journalists may need more time to verify every detail in fast-paced news environments. In such cases, they might publish the press release with minimal verification but update the story as more information becomes available.
  5. Legal and Ethical Considerations are paramount in journalism. Journalists are acutely aware of the legal and ethical implications of publishing false or misleading information. This awareness not only encourages but compels them to check the validity of press releases to avoid potential repercussions, highlighting their commitment to truth and accuracy.

In summary, while journalists use press releases as a source of information, they routinely verify the content, particularly when it involves significant or potentially contentious news. The extent of verification depends on several factors: the credibility of the Source providing the press release, the nature of the news itself, the standards of the news organization, and the time available for thorough reporting.

It's important to understand that a press release does not guarantee automatic publication. Journalists evaluate press releases critically, fact-checking and assessing the newsworthiness before deciding whether or not to publish. Building strong relationships with journalists and ensuring the credibility and relevance of your information can increase the likelihood of your press release receiving attention and coverage.
