As a Scottsdale-based, woman and minority-owned business, we are honored that our research at Government Leadership Solutions was recently featured in Newsweek .
Our 2023 State of Local Government Leadership Pipeline report highlights a growing concern among government leaders: the quality of local governance is at risk due to a lack of ready-now leaders.
According to our research, only 25% of local government leaders rate their leadership pipeline as strong, with nearly half fearing a potential crisis. This leadership gap could have severe consequences for the future of our local communities and the services they depend on. But there is a solution—one that often goes overlooked: our veterans.
The Newsweek article points out that veterans, with their skills in leadership, conflict resolution, and crisis management, are ideally positioned to step into these roles. Veterans vote at higher rates, volunteer more, and bring an unwavering commitment to public service, qualities that align perfectly with the needs of local government.
Arizona is home to more than 470,000 veterans, making this an untapped resource for local government roles. By creating pathways for veterans to transition from military to civic leadership, we can solve two pressing issues: helping veterans find meaningful post-service careers and addressing the leadership shortage in local government.
This opportunity cannot be overstated. As local governments struggle to find talent, veterans represent a ready and willing workforce with a deep commitment to service and community. Programs like the Department of Defense's SkillBridge initiative, which allows transitioning service members to work in government, offer a pathway to address this gap.
