Minister Keogh – First World War veterans gravesites recognised
In 2023, community groups, ex-service organisations and individuals were invited to apply for assistance of up to $450 to mark the graves of First World War veterans whose deaths were unrelated to their war service, fulfilling an election commitment of the Albanese Government. This program was developed to ensure First World War veterans, many of whom lie in unmarked graves, receive the respect and recognition that they deserve. As part of this grant process, the Repatriation Commission assessed all applications and also determined that 44 veterans who had been identified through this program were in fact eligible for official War Grave status and commemoration.

New data has revealed a record rate of Aboriginal Victorians seeking help for homelessness as frontline services hit breaking point.?The number of Aboriginal Victorians accessing homelessness providers jumped six per cent to 11,860 in the 2022/23 financial year, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Specialist Homelessness Services data shows.?It follows an average 7.3 per cent increase in Aboriginal Victorians turning to frontline homelessness services each year for the previous four years.?

The WA state government's mid-term performance review has revealed that the January 2023 floods in the Kimberley will cost taxpayers over $869 million dollars. Broome-based conservation group Environs Kimberley is calling on the State and Federal governments to recoup the cost from fossil fuel companies who have made billions in profits over the past year, while driving worsening climate impacts. Environs Kimberley is also calling on the WA and Commonwealth governments not to approve new gas projects in the Kimberley, including proposals by Buru Energy and Woodside.?
Stop Word Order extended in Tallaganda State Forest
The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has extended a Stop Work Order applying to parts of Tallaganda State Forest, near Captains Flat. The extension of the Stop Work Order was required because Forestry Corporation NSW (FCNSW) is yet to advise the EPA that it has undertaken the necessary surveys to identify and protect Southern Greater Glider den trees. A surge in international airline capacity has meant a busy year for Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) inspectors charged with ensuring aircraft and crew maintain the high safety standards expected by Aussies heading overseas this summer.?CASA inspectors have seen foreign aircraft numbers return to pre-pandemic levels and this year conducted 167 random inspections — up from about 120 last year — aimed at ensuring foreign registered aircraft and crew meet international and Australian safety requirements.
RACV reminds Victorians of road rules for a safe, stress-free summer on the roads
RACV is urging everyone to keep road rules and safety at the forefront of their minds this festive season. 287 lives have been lost on Victorian roads in 2023, up 23.2 per cent (as at midnight 18 December 2023). RACV is calling on Victorian motorists to be mindful of keeping to the left on a multi-lane road (rule 130) and not stopping on a freeway (rule 177), with Victoria Police figures showing almost 10,000 infringements totalling over $1.5 million in fines were handed out to motorists over the last 10 years for breaking these rules. Infringements for stopping on a freeway have doubled in the last four years, up from 401 in 2019 to 978 in 2022.
