World-first fusion device to be built at UNSW Sydney
The first ever nuclear fusion device to be wholly designed, built and operated by students is being planned for UNSW Sydney.?The program is being supported by industry partners Tokamak Energy and HB11 Energy and Dr Patrick A. Burr , from the UNSW MechSoc , said: “This project will be the first in the world where students will design, build and manage a fusion reactor." Dr Burr aims to have a working device operating in two to three years.

The skills and value of paramedics has skyrocketed over the past decade as they have taken on increasingly clinical and public health functions. Today: Health professionals call on NSW Government to phase out gas
Health professionals will gather today outside NSW Parliament to deliver an open letter signed by the Australian Medical Association (NSW) Branch, two medical colleges, the NSW Nurses and Midwives' Association and 19 other health organisations calling for gas in homes and public buildings to be replaced with renewable electricity to protect health. Collectively these organisations represent over 100,000 Australian health professionals.
24-hour Adelaide tram stoppage called off

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union has called off a 24-hour stoppage of Adelaide’s tram network slated for Tuesday (12 September) following further discussions with Torrens Connect at the Fair Work Commission. RTBU SA/NT Secretary Darren Phillips said. “[Tram workers] recognise that this dispute is frustrating for commuters, so they have agreed to suspend all industrial actions while they consider the new offer from Torrens Correct."
Profession-wide commitment needed to achieve pay equity in the law
The Law Society of NSW has developed a resource to assist the legal profession to address persistent pay gaps between male and female solicitors across the whole career cycle. President of the Law Society Cassandra Banks said the resource, to be launched by Sex Discrimination Commissioner Anna Cody this evening, presents a ten point plan for law firms to reduce and aim to eliminate pay gaps evident in the profession.
Numbers don’t lie: increased investment in rural health care urgently needed
The National Rural Health Alliance (the Alliance) is concerned about new rural and remote health data released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) which shows potentially avoidable deaths and hospitalisations were two to three times higher in remote and very remote areas compared with major cities. In addition, the number of non-hospital, non-referred attendances per person were lowest in remote and very remote communities.
