Newsletters For Humanity: Allison Nepveux Technology is Great. Teamwork Makes it Greater.

To us team means Together Everyone Achieves More. But when you bring technology into it, It can be a game changer ????????????

So what does Technology and Teamwork look like and mean to you?

So let's take a look in what Allison Nepveux has for us to think about and have a great and engaging conversation about this and so much more ????????????

We tend to think of farmers as rugged individualists, stoically coping with unforgiving weather and volatile markets, and relying on their experience and perseverance to be successful.? While all that is true, it doesn’t capture the full picture. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that farming is a team sport, and today’s farmers are the pivotal players in an interconnected global agricultural network.

I grew up raising Santa Gertrudis cattle in southeast Texas. I’m one of only two daughters, but my family always felt larger than that. My childhood friends were other kids from across the United States whose families also ranched, just like mine. We spent weekends and spring breaks and summer vacations at stock shows or industry meetings, watching our parents and grandparents collectively solve how to better market our entire breed. What someone learned worked well in New Mexico or Oklahoma inevitably made its way into our pasture in Brenham, Texas. There was no single part of my family’s ranch that wasn’t touched or influenced by this larger community. The genetics of our herd took four generations of collective tinkering. My favorite cow, Tallula, was donated to me by another ranch. I also suspect that some of my least favorite chores originated elsewhere first! I can easily credit these hundreds of “extended family members” for not only helping us to develop better showmanship, or better herd stock, or better ranch management, but for helping me to become a better, kinder and more grounded person.

Fast forward to today, I've made a career in agribusiness and sustainability. Working with grain farmers, commodity traders, regulators and policymakers has shown me there is still a broad community in agriculture that is ready and eager to help.? Getting them aligned with one another can mean the difference between a farm’s success or failure. One area that unites us is the recognition that sustainability – and more recently, carbon farming – can help grow a business in scale and do so in a way that leads to tangible, positive change.

What’s not to like about making money while also making our world a little better?

A Changing World Requires New Solutions

Perhaps more than any other profession, farmers are especially tuned into the impact of extreme weather conditions and shifting climate trends. These challenges make it more difficult for farmers to cultivate their crops, ensure their livelihood, and supply the global food system we rely upon. It’s an important reason why we’re seeing an increasing interest in regenerative farming.? With a better understanding of science and new technologies to support them, farmers are increasingly engaged in the business of carbon capture.? The key to making it work is a recognition that it must also be profitable.

My team at Bayer is working to decarbonize agriculture by developing new solutions to help farmers address the impact of climate change in an environmentally and financially sustainable way. A major reason that the co-benefits of regenerative agriculture (like biodiversity, and water quality and quantity) is a technical reality is because advances in data science make accurate measurement of the carbon sequestered in the soil possible. Farmers who use regenerative practices, such as enhanced nitrogen management, cover crops and reduced tillage, now have the tools to participate in the growing carbon market.

Working Together Toward a Sustainable Future

The vision of Bayer Ecosystem Services is to enable every farmer to profit from the restoration of agricultural ecosystems by reducing emissions across the agricultural supply chain. This begins with data-driven insights and a deep understanding of agriculture. At Bayer, we rely on hard science, operational know-how, and lasting relationships within the ag community to turn problems into solutions. This includes:

Know-how: Thousands of experts in weather, soil, plant, water, climate, insects, chemistry, biology and other life sciences, along with decades of experience in agriculture and problem-solving.

Presence: Research farms in dozens of regions?around the world, led by local agronomists and supported by an industry-leading $3 billion in annual R&D investments.

Technology: Climate FieldView? is the leading digital farming platform, used on 220 million acres in 23 different countries to help farmers see what worked – and what didn’t – to improve their business. We also launched ForGround by Bayer, a farmer-first platform to help growers learn, adopt and expand regenerative ag practices.

Relationships: Working with farmers, food processors, retailers, traders, and others across the food value chain to support sustainable agriculture, assisted by 70 food chain experts in 44 countries.

At Bayer Ecosystem Services we believe that building strong partnerships within this extensive network is the only way our industry will be successful in creating a more sustainable future. That’s why we’re collaborating with many organizations within and outside agriculture to develop a path so that farmers who adopt and stick with regenerative practices can be rewarded for their effort. Recently, Bayer has partnered with several agri-food companies, while improving carbon program offerings to farmers, to build regenerative solutions that can work for everyone.

If I’ve learned anything from my years on our family ranch and my professional career, it’s that the more people you have focused on a goal, the greater the chance you will achieve it. The drive to adopt more regenerative farming practices – including the reduction of carbon emissions – is not inevitable, but it is possible when we put our collective best efforts to good use. We have the pieces to the puzzle – the finest farmers, smartest scientists, creative companies, and transformative technologies – to make our world a better place. When we work together as a team, we can make that happen.
