Newsletter: World Food Prize Ceremony | Soils and Health
Our team recently traveled to the Borlaug Dialogue, in Des Moines, Iowa where we networked with global food security leaders and attended the World Food Prize at the Iowa State Capitol.
In a very grand, inspiring ceremony, this world renown prize is awarded annually, and this year recognized the conservation of crop seed diversity for the future of agriculture. You can read about the work of the winners, Geoffrey Hawtin and Cary Fowler, in our first article below.
We also held a webinar with two experts on the soil-health connection, our best attended event to date.? David Montgomery and Anne Biklé, authors of “What Your Food Ate” detailed how healthy soils promote healthy crops and a healthy gut microbiome --or put another way, unhealthy soils have led to the collapse of the civilizations on which they depend.
Lastly, Grow Further is heading to India to meet with leading food-security experts and potential partners there as we begin planning to extend our programming into that country. We’ll keep you updated once we have news to share.
Yours in a Food-Secure Future,
Peter Kelly, Founder, Grow Further
Grow Further at the 2024 Borlaug Dialogue
Every year, food security advocates from across the world gather in Des Moines, Iowa for a one-of-a-kind celebration. And once again, Grow Further was there for the occasion.
Considered the premier food security conference of the year, the 2024 Borlaug Dialogue took place October 28-31. It was a packed agenda as usual.
Geoffrey Hawtin and Cary Fowler, winners of the 2024 World Food Prize, were present to deliver the Borlaug Lecture at Iowa State University and to formally accept their prize. They were honored for their work
What’s Good for the Soil is Good for Us
Good food security and nutrition start with plentiful and healthy food. Abundant, nutritious food starts with good seeds and, perhaps more importantly, good soil.
David Montgomery and Anne Biklé are book authors and fellow food security advocates. David has a background in geology and biology. Anne is a biologist and science writer. Together, they’re a powerful pair of public speakers spreading the word about the benefits of regenerative agriculture and why it’s not only good for farmers, but also good for human health.
It all starts with the soil, they said. “What’s good for the soil, our crops, and our livestock is good for us, too.”
