Latest

  • Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have made their final appeals in swing states such as Pennsylvania and Michigan as polls open. US security agencies warn that Russia-linked disinformation campaigns claiming election manipulation could incite violence.
  • Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said a cease-fire could reduce Iran's retaliation against Israel, however, it is unlikely as Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu vowed on November 3 to push Hezbollah beyond the Litani River and prevent its rearming.
  • Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Smyhal emphasized the need for external financing to cover a 10% GDP deficit in the proposed 2025 budget which allocates 26% of GDP to defense.

Security and Defense

  • North Korea test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile landing west of Japan after the US and South Korea condemned North Korean troop deployments in Russia. The US flew a long-range bomber with Japan and South Korea near the Korean Peninsula in response.
  • Southeast Asian states continue to push back against Chinese actions in the South China Sea. Vietnam protested China's alleged detention of its fishing boats near the Paracel Islands, while Indonesia vowed appropriate responses to related incidents.
  • Indonesia and Russia have launched their first bilateral military exercises in a five-day naval drill. Indonesia's new President Prabowo Subianto aims to enhance cooperation with Russia while maintaining relations with the US.

Energy

  • Ukraine and Russia are reportedly considering talks to halt strikes on each other's energy facilities, potentially reviving stalled negotiations from August. Moscow's demand for Ukraine to withdraw from occupied regions in Kursk makes progress unlikely.
  • Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 plan to reduce reliance on oil includes significant investments in renewable energy through partnerships with China, which gains greater access to Middle Eastern markets and regional influence.
  • Australia risks lagging in the green transition due to higher costs, low metal prices, complex regulations, and insufficient green energy despite its vast mineral resources and renewable energy potential.

Manufacturing

  • India's manufacturing sector surged in October, driven by robust domestic and international demand, increased production, export, and consumer and investment goods driven by business deals in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the US.
  • Singapore has launched Asia's first automated mRNA manufacturing facility producing 100,000 COVID-19 vaccines daily, positioning Singapore as a global leader in nucleic acid therapeutics research and commercialization.
  • The United States aims to increase mineral exports from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and surrounding regions and expand certification and tracing schemes amid concerns about the current rules regarding conflict minerals.

Supply Lines

  • Greenland's supplies of 43 of 50 of the world's most sought-after critical mineral supplies are crucial for the modern economy and armed forces, as China leads the supplies.
  • The European Space Agency has initiated a Decarbonization through Digitalization in Shipping project to help ships cut greenhouse gas emissions by overcoming inefficiencies in the ship-port interaction.
  • Transit volumes of liquified natural gas through the Panama Canal have dropped 65% as US exporters redirected shipments to Europe. The canal seeks to attract LNG vessels back to Asia with a new reservation system as regional demand rises.

  • Governments across Southeast and South Asia, such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and India show signs of heading toward online repression in addition to China’s growing crackdown on online dissent and surveillance of activists.
  • egotiators worldwide will meet in Azerbaijan on November 11 for the twentyninth annual UN climate change conference. The goal remains to boost international efforts to limit warming below 1.5°C (2.7°F).
  • The Pentagon released a detailed plan to revitalize the declining US defense sector, focusing on deterring China amid concerns about its larger manufacturing capabilities.
