THIS MONTH'S READINGS

Scientific publication - “Evidence of dark oxygen production at the abyssal seafloor” - Nature

This article presents the results of experiments conducted on the abyssal floor of the Pacific, where organisms typically consume oxygen. However, researchers discovered net oxygen production in benthic chambers (incubation chambers used to study deep-sea organisms in situ), suggesting "dark oxygen production." Polymetallic nodules, these rock formations rich in metals such as iron, nickel, and copper formed over millennia, appear to be the source of this oxygen production through chemical reactions. These findings challenge previous studies on the oxygen cycle in deep-sea environments and could have major implications for understanding biogeochemical cycles and benthic marine ecosystems.
