A) Books & Papers:
As an old military guy, from time to time I share some wisdom coming out of that field of expertise. The wisdom described in the book Team of Teams, by General Stanley McCrystal, is one on one translatable to organizational life.
General McCrystal, was originally trained in the US - 82th Airborne Division, to enter later on into the US - 75th Ranger Regiment and to eventually become the Commander of JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command) / NATO in Afghanistan.
McCrystal revised the approach to Special Operations, during his time as JSOC Commander, as NATO SOF operators were losing to vastly under-sizes, under-equipped, under-trained, and non-well-led adversaries, being Taliban and later on IS.
So, McCrystal reflected on how that situation could be turned around in the field.
This book talks about the incredible power that smaller teams have to deal with difficult and complex issues, that tend to pop up in even larger organizations. So this book answers the question of how bigger organizations can possess the cohesion and adaptability of a small team.
The three learnings throughout this powerful book are:
1) If you want to solve problems in our complex world, you’ve got to work in teams.
But/Tip: Make sure that the team members share a common purpose, and that they share experiences, which inspires the build-up of 200% mutual trust.
2) The key to getting a bigger organization to work together is to form a larger team comprised of smaller teams.
But/Tip: If a team doesn’t share an understanding of the context of their work, they will make choices that might be good for the team, but not necessarily good for the whole organization.
3) An efficient team of teams controls decision-making while their leader focuses more on culture than daily operations.
But/Tip: Before employing empowered execution or decentralized command, make sure the team has sufficient information to make decisions, otherwise, it can be disastrous.
The lessons in this book are as simple as they are powerful. So, enjoy the book, but please keep in mind that this is not an easy book, as the writer is a higher officer, and a well-educated, well-trained, seasoned combat leader...!
Have fun...!
