AgriBrasilis – Why is it good to plant wheat in the Cerrado Biome?
Vanoli Fronza –?The Cerrado is a vast agricultural region, which encompasses several states in Brazil and, in some regions, it is also possible to plant wheat, both in rainfed cultivation (without irrigation) and in irrigated cultivation (using a central pivot).
In general, the planting of rainfed wheat is possible in regions with altitudes greater than 700 m and in soils with more than 30% clay, also including areas with lower altitudes in the States of S?o Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais. Irrigated cultivation would be recommended for areas with at least 400 m of altitude and in soils with more than 15% clay.

Area planted with corn?in the 2024/25 season in Argentina could reach 7.67 million hectares. This represents a drop of 21%, or 2 million hectares, when compared to the area planted in 2023/24, mainly due to the?damages caused by the corn leafhopper (Dalbulus maidis) in the previous season. In Brazil, heatwaves and low humidity in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul are increasing the risk of fires. In the city of Pedro Gomes, the temperature reached 41.2oC, the highest recorded in the State in 2024. In Colombia, per capita?consumption of mechanized rice reached 46 kg?in 2024, an increase of 12% when compared to the consumption observed in 2019, of 41 kg. The region with the highest consumption was Córdoba, with 71 kg per person. There was an increase of 9.5% in the planted area in 2024 when compared to 2023. In?Argentina, the total costs (direct and indirect, without calculating income tax) to?grow?wheat in the Southeast of Buenos Aires?are estimated at?666 US$/ha, compared to 719 US$/ha in August of 2023.
