Types of Mentoring: Display Front of STORE, Shelves Back of STORE

Mentoring comes in many forms, just like the various items you find in a store. You can easily see some types of mentoring, while others, equally important, are kept in the back.?

The mentoring types you see in the front are like the primary displays in a store, attracting attention and being the most commonly used. These include one-on-one mentoring, face-to-face meetings, and peer mentoring. They are straightforward and visible, making them easy to understand and implement.

In the back of the store, you find mentoring types that are less visible but equally valuable. These include online mentoring, group mentoring, and informal mentoring. They might not be as obvious, but they offer significant benefits depending on the situation and needs of the mentee.?

Valuing both the "front of store" and "back of store" mentoring types can help you decide the collaborative approach for any mentoring relationship.?

Here Are Three Reasons Why It's Beneficial To Know Mentoring Types

Tailored Development:

Manage a tailored approach to development. Different mentoring types can address specific needs, such as skill development, career progression, or personal growth. By matching the mentoring type to the mentee’s unique requirements, the mentee and mentor can achieve more meaningful and effective outcomes.

Maximized Engagement:

Amplify engagement from both mentors and mentees. Some individuals may thrive in a group mentoring setting, while others might benefit more from one-on-one sessions. Selecting the appropriate mentoring type can enhance participation, nurture commitment, and advance satisfaction in the mentoring relationship.

Enhanced Flexibility:

Lead from patience and flexibility in mentoring arrangements. This adaptability ensures mentoring can continue despite shifts/adjustments in circumstances, such as geographical location or time constraints. For instance, virtual mentoring or e-mentoring can be excellent alternatives when face-to-face meetings are not possible.

List of Mentoring Types:

  • 1 to 1 (maybe 1 to 2)
  • Face to face (offline) and remote–distant–virtual (online)

  • Executive Mentoring?
  • Traditional - one-way
  • Effective or modern mentoring
  • Reciprocal - two-way
  • Paid and/or volunteer
  • Inside mentor – inside the organization (cultural, cross-functional)?
  • Outside mentor – outside the organization, in your community.?
  • Auto-Biography mentor – someone you read
  • Social Media mentor – someone you follow through social media/webinars???
  • Younger mentor – someone who is younger than you?
  • Group Mentoring – like mentor circles
  • Entrepreneurial mentor – someone who says they can mentor
  • Flash - once and done

I had never heard this term before. Just like in marketing, there are dozens of possibilities, each has its own experts. it sounds like front of store and back of store will provide different perspectives on the same thingnecessary advice for the mentee to consider. Stephen do you recommend seeking both at the same time, or becoming more comfortable with one first and then seek the other
