Join Chris Newman & Dan Smith for their upcoming Webinar on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM GMT.?

They will be discussing the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UKNZCBS) and its impact on HVAC systems.

HVAC systems play a major role in decarbonising the built environment. How will the UKNZCBS limits on energy consumption, embodied Carbon and refrigerant GWP affect their design now and in the future?

We will present the reasons why decarbonisation is happening and show the pace and scale of change required to stay on track with the UK’s legally binding Carbon budgets .

We will present an overview of the newly launched UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard and explain the metrics and limits it is using to measure and validate how a Net Zero building should perform.

Areas where HVAC systems will significantly impact a building’s ability to meet these new limits such as operational energy usage and up front embodied Carbon will be highlighted and their impacts on design and performance discussed.

Net Zero and the Retrofit Challenge

The retrofit revolution is here, and M&E contractors must be at the forefront of it. On Thursday 26th September we gathered top mechanical and electrical (M&E) contractors in London to address one of the most critical challenges of our time - decarbonisation and the role of retrofitting in meeting Net Zero targets.

One hundred days and counting

One hundred days in office would appear to be far too short a period to judge any administration, but it has long been a favourite timeframe used by political commentators to draw conclusions about successes and failures and the likely future fortunes of a newly elected government.

Unlocking Sustainable Construction through Circular Economy

Marco Lamperti Tornaghi has shared an insightful document on LinkedIn about how the construction sector can significantly contribute to a healthier planet by adopting circular economy principles. Standardisation is key to promoting circular construction practices.

What’s stopping us from thinking differently about retrofit?

If we are going to build less, does that mean we need to maintain more, asks Anna Beckett. In most modern ways of thinking, we attach a certain amount of permanence to buildings. We consider them as part of the landscape almost in the same way as rivers or hills – particularly older buildings.

Why on earth isn’t the government engaging with architects on retrofit?

Without architects’ close expert involvement, government plans to retrofit millions of homes will be prone to unintended consequences such as mould, argues Kunle Barker.

Construction Voices:

Here, we invite people to share their valuable insights and expertise on creating a sustainable built environment. This week we include an article written by Matt Colgan , Founder of Sustainabuild.

Sustainabuild: A networking community for sustainable construction

Founded in January of this year, Sustainabuild is a networking platform designed to connect professionals in the built environment, helping them grow their Net Zero knowledge and network. With over 20 years of experience in international events, Sustainabuild Founder, Matt Colgan recognised a growing need for regular and more intimate in person meeting opportunities to encourage collaboration and knowledge-sharing among sustainability leaders which is exactly what Sustainabuild offers primarily through its monthly Breakfast Club in Scotland and London.

What makes Sustainabuild different?

Unlike many large, overwhelming conferences, Sustainabuild focuses on intimate, impactful gatherings. Our monthly Breakfast Clubs provide a space for expert speakers to share insights on key sustainability challenges such as the green skills gap, sustainable building materials, circular building and construction, smart buildings and digital twins, large scale commercial and public sector retrofits, and decarbonising heat in buildings. Our events attract around 40 professionals from various sectors, including architects, engineers, and sustainability consultants, offering valuable networking opportunities in a relaxed environment.

Since launch we have hosted 10 Breakfast Clubs across cities including Edinburgh, Glasgow, and London, featuring 30 expert speakers and engaging 345 professionals. Monthly event themes are, ‘Addressing the Green Skills Gap’, ‘Circular Building and construction’, ‘Smart buildings and digital twins’ and ‘Biodiversity in construction’. Each event includes three expert talks, providing concise yet inspiring insights to spark conversation and innovation.

Expanding Sustainabuild: from Edinburgh to London and beyond

What began in Edinburgh has now expanded to London, with more cities in the pipeline. Sustainabuild has a fast-growing UK-wide community, with over 2,000 LinkedIn followers, reflecting the increasing interest in sustainable practices within the construction industry.
