Newsletter 22: Spotlight - or Floodlight Consciousness?
1 Introduction
In the previous Newsletters the intention was to establish that those things that are widely believed, now need an enormous amount of revision and refinement. We were introduced to the massive concept that we as human beings are in the most fortunate position to create magnificent lives of well-being since we are in partnership with a Source that is literally involved everywhere in Its Creation. This Source, #Logos [1] , or God was described as a benevolent #Consciousness whose expansion is driven by processes and relationships as reflected in quantum theory and complex systems. In short, we were introduced to a Creative Energy which underwrites the unfolding of the phenomenal Universe by being continually active and involved in that Universe; a single field of potentiality which in the trajectory of time constantly actualizes Itself in a constant Becoming; an unbroken chain of life that makes our existence possible. In religious terms it implies that Spirit (Source or Logos) and Body (the Cosmos) are not distinct or opposed but that it discerns different aspects of phenomena reflecting different aspects of a nonetheless indivisible reality[2]. It is Being pouring Itself out as a Continuous Incarnation. ?
2 The Grounding Consciousness
McGilchrist argues that since the material Cosmos is an emanation or projection of a grounding Consciousness, It would naturally produces conscious beings. These conscious beings have been described in Newsletter 18 as wholes that enrich the bigger Whole to which it is connected.
To be able to enrich the greater Whole, #AlanWatts is of the opinion that we as human beings have two types of consciousness that benefit from each other. He calls the one type of consciousness a “spotlight consciousness” and the other a “floodlight consciousness[3]. This is very much in concert with the hemisphere hypothesis of McGilchrist who ascribes the narrow-beam, sharply focused attention of human beings to the left hemisphere of our brains, and a more holistic type of attention to the right hemisphere.
Both #McGilchrist and Watts agree that our Western culture has taught us to specialize in spotlight or left hemisphere attention or awareness only, which causes an identification of ourselves with only that form of consciousness. We think we are our spotlight consciousness, says Watts, and we very largely ignore the floodlight consciousness that is working all the time and of which every nerve end we have, is the instrument of the bigger Whole. In a similar vein #DavidIcke announces that we think we are our names, our life stories, our races, our religions, and our backgrounds. But, he says, we identify with a set of labels that are transitory and incredibly brief[4]. ?
3 Who are we?
A Points of attention
We are points of attention within the Infinite Stream of Consciousness, says Icke. The Stream of Consciousness (Source) actually observes reality from all our different points of view, he states. And we know by now that Source Energy is very intimate and supportive to all our preferences, because It is us.
But if we identify with our labels as the I, as the total I (spotlight or left hemisphere consciousness), we might see the world in a certain way, and it can be very frightening, relates Icke. But when we identify as an eternal, infinite awareness having this experience (floodlight or right hemisphere consciousness), it’s not so frightening and we have the ability to connect dots because “we see things from a panorama, and not a myopia”.
Of course, we need both types of consciousness and both hemispheres of our brains. While the floodlight or the right hemisphere consciousness has evolved to be our means of comprehending the panorama, the spotlight or left hemisphere consciousness has evolved to execute procedures in manipulating our world. The problem is that when the spotlight consciousness becomes the master instead of being the servant, it changes the values that is brought to the encounter. It changes what we find and then changes what it is, with disastrous results[5] .
B Points of attraction
According to the #abrahamhicks material we are, apart from being points of attention, also points of attraction. Abraham (Collective Consciousness) endorses the right hemisphere view in the sense that they state unequivocally that we are extensions of Source Energy. This implies that we are totally (with our minds, bodies, and souls) geared to keep #wellbeing flowing in the Universe. We do that successfully when we distinguish between the frequencies we draw our inspiration from.

We can be inspired from different points of attraction, which are indicated by how we feel. When we feel angry, we can feel inspired to say or do something which will attract more of the same – more reasons to be angry.
4 Conclusion
So, as we move about daily in our spotlight consciousness, we need to be aware of what frequencies we respond to. The aim is to run our spotlight consciousness as a servant and our floodlight consciousness as the Master. The best way is to start our day by practicing ourselves into the high vibration of Source Energy so that we adjust our points of attraction before we walk into any circumstance[6] .
