Newsletter #12 - Week 35

. . . MEMORANDUM I

As a continuation of Newsletters 6 to 11, today, let's wrap up the concept of motivation and how it relates to a reliable set of leadership skills.?

When we perceive that we're on track towards our goal, we get little pulses of dopamine to keep us motivated and moving forward.?

This explains why mental skills like?segmenting are?so powerful because breaking down a huge goal into small pieces is an effective way to create little 'wins' along the way.?

It also explains why?compartmentalisation?is so helpful for rebounding from setbacks. Our ability to set it aside and refocus when something doesn't go well on what we can control helps us control our stress response.?

Compartmentalisation also reengages the rational decision-making part of our brain, reducing the volume of our emotional response and allowing us to find a reason to keep moving forward.?

These and the other mental skills are important in situations devoid of positive feedback. To not give up, we have to regulate our own experience to find wins in a situation that doesn't provide them.?

To reliably implement these skills, we have to learn how to use them in increasingly realistic situations in the challenging environments of leadership.

Clearly, reading this newsletter won't magically unlock the power to have unlimited motivation and overcome every obstacle, as all the concepts mentioned from the beginning of this article in newsletter #6 are just words in your head.

So now comes the hard part...

You only really know something after you've experienced it, and you have to do the work to turn those words into something you can implement and demonstrate when the challenges hit hard.

To do this, you'll obviously need to step outside your comfort zone and pursue difficult experiences while consciously practising these concepts.?

But as it has been proven by all the clients I already had the honour to serve with my professional executive leadership services, if you do, someday you'll be able to say things like "quitting isn't an option" and know that you actually mean it as the exemplary leader you are.

. . . MEMORANDUM II

Thought leadership, sadly, has become a?buzzword-riddled self-congratulation designed to slot neatly into the latest echo chamber full of ivory tower hypotheses that sound good in?theory.

Maybe it's time to rethink?thought leadership?and bring it back to its original meaning and value, and I dive deeper into this thought in my article "Rethinking Thought Leadership". [1]

. . . MEMORANDUM III

Clearly, a good posture is associated with success!

And my article "Having A Good Posture & Holding Your Head High As A Leader" [2] shares some insights into why holding your head high and striking the?posture?of a?winner?is an?advantage?for every?leader.

. . . MEMORANDUM IV

Business is a lot like a snooker table, where you hit one ball into another, and then it keeps going and knocking into other balls.

And for every?visionary leader, it is essential to consider the angle at which the cue ball rebounds off the target ball.

You can find out more in the comparison in "Visionary Leadership - Lessons From Snooker" [3].

. . . MEMORANDUM V

Last but not least, "It's Lonely At The Top - Choosing Solitude Instead Of Loneliness" [4] sheds some light on why actively chosen time alone in?solitude?can be very beneficial for balancing commonly and often experienced feelings of?isolation?and?loneliness?in?leadership?positions.
